"Bitter Memory of Childhood"
The poignant life-size bronze statue of a hollow eyed, obviously starving little girl holding a few stalks of wheat called "Bitter Memory of Childhood" by sculptor Petro Drozdowsky, was made from the same cast as the original one that stands near the entrance of the National Holodomor Museum in Kyiv, Ukraine. The wheat symbolism is significant because those who survived often did so by eating grain they managed to hide from soldiers.
Holodomor, which in Ukrainian means “extermination by hunger”, is the term used to describe the deliberate starvation of millions of Ukrainians in the Ukrainian SSR and adjacent Cossack territories between 1932 and 1933 by Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin who wanted to destroy the people living there seeking independence from his rule. Millions of Ukrainians & Cossacks died of starvation during that short period, up to a third of them children. Because this unprecedented peacetime catastrophe was a deliberate political policy, it is classed as genocide. More info here:
