The City of Frescoes (Padova)

It’s 3:30 am and I rollover for the 100th time. This bed and pillow is made of concrete. I know Kirsten is sleeping lite so I try to lie still as I can and not wake her up. I don’t want to have the hard bed discussion until breakfast.

Finally its 7:30 am, I roll over and Kirsten is still asleep. Holy cow I can’t believe it.

I lay there for another 15 minutes and she starts to wake up. Good morning, did you sleep well I ask. I get the look and jump from the bed and run for the bathroom. I take my shower and run out the door saying I’ll see you at breakfast honey…..

Breakfast is the normal good with lots of Germans just like last time we were here.

We load up car and check out.

Kirsten jumps on the Autostrada and head toward Rovereto

From Roverto we took the scenic route over the mountains. Talk about major hairpin turns, 2 plus hours worth. After a while we take a coffee break.

Finally in Vicenza we stopped for lunch and walked around. In the center we found a float. Kirsten recognized it from when we were in Spain for Easter. This one is HUGE, I mean HUGE and they are going to carry it this weekend.

Next the author of Romeo & Juliet is buried here at the Domo. His name is Luigi da Porto. And you thought it was William Shakespeare. He turned it into a play. Didn’t teach you that in literature did they.

We got back into car and drove to Padua. We visit the Domo and surprisingly it very modern. After the domo find us a café and have a snack. We decide to stay in Padua for the night and found us an Ibis Hotel. We check in and decide to go back downtown for dinner.

Now I have always wanted to go to Padua every time I’ve been to Italy. Well it has just never worked out, today it did. The main reason is; I have always wanted to see the Cappella Degli Scrovegni. You say WHAT?

I know your tittering on the edge of your seat. Who, What, is the Cappella Degli Scrovegni. Well it’s this guy named Giotto who painted this chapel so that his rich arrogant father could go to heaven. Yea, it’s like the Sistine Chapel in Rome. Look it up on the Internet. Talk about buying your way into heaven.

Ok, now some of you… namely Rob Bullock… know what I’m talking about. This chapel is climate controlled and only 25 people at a time can enter. You are only allowed to be in the chapel 15 minutes and all you can do is look. NO PICTURES! You are being watched. YEAH!

You need advanced tickets and the wait could be all day. So what do I do I waltz up around 7PM and ask you have any opening? The lady tells me yes. I damn near piss on my self. I immediately run over to Kirsten and ask would you like to go see the Chapel. They have 2 openings. She gracefully turns, lovingly looks into my eyes, smiles and says NO!

Ok, now if you remember on our honeymoon Kirsten left me at the door in Turin’s world-renowned Egyptian Museum. Remember, same thing happened here.

Well I go; it takes about an hour to go through the process. It was worth the price of the ticket and time. It is amazing; I truly felt closeness to God when in the presence of this divine devotion.

As I’m leaving the chapel area I see Kirsten sitting on the park bench. She looks up and asks did you have a good time. She knows I did by the calmness she see’s over me.

I know it’s hard to believe that I’m ever calm, it does happen. Ask Kirsten.

Kirsten then says I found where were eating. Of course I’m thinking pizza but she says it this restaurant she found on GOEUROPE.Com.

I’m like ok let’s go; we walk through Padua and find the restaurant. We walk in and ask for a table for 2. The hostess asks if we have reservations, Kirsten answers no could you please work us in.

The hostess says I’ll work you in, be back here in 30 minutes and I’ll seat you.

I’m thinking lets get a pizza and bottle of wine and sit on the Domo steps. Kirsten turns and says were eating here. Ok, we stroll for 30 minutes and work our way back to the restaurant. It’s now 8 PM the restaurant is still packed people are being turned away and we have to wait another 30 minutes. I’m thinking this stuff must be AWESOME!

Kirsten is getting frustrated, I get her a glass of wine and we wait.

Finally were seated, between the espresso machine and the bar. Yea, it’s that tight. Behind me is a guy I swear he is Stephen Spielberg, I know your thinking right. I swear it’s him; or his twin.

The meal would take to long to describe. It was worth the wait and I will return again to Padua just to eat at this restaurant. This is the best meal I have ever eaten. I know your thinking I’m crazy. Yea I am, crazy about Antica Osteria Dal Capo.

We walk back to the car and drive to the hotel, man it’s late. I need to get some sleep.
