There isn't much to be said to sum up an overnight flight to Taipei except.....UGHH.

All I definitely can recommend to anyone flying EVA Airlines is no matter how cheap the flight may be it definitely pays to get the upgrade to their Evergreen Deluxe Class. Although I must say our flight was pretty painless “well… the Ambien really helps with that” when we actually boarded the plane and saw that there were no screens on the back of the seats and just a shared monitor for each section we were both a bit frightened. Excellent we get to try and learn Taiwanese while watching their blockbuster movies for 13 hours…FUN. It really wasn’t that horrible, they were actually English movies with subtitles so we got the better end of that deal. I powered through “Hoot” before I took my night-night pill where as Kirsten went to sleep almost immediately. I swear I might have to relinquish my sleeping anywhere superpower because that girl; planes, trains, automobiles she can sleep. We’ll see if the Ambien helps with the jet lag as our Men’s Journal recommendation.

Taipei Airport 5 in the morning…

I’ve never been able to tell anything about a city from their airport and at 5 in the morning every major airport is indistinguishable from another. (Las Vegas-definite exception to the rule) With the Duty Free shops and airport restaurants going through their opening procedures as Kirsten and I kill time before the next leg this might as well still be SFO. The first leg was over in a heartbeat. Kirsten powered through with 11 hours or so of sleep. All I remember was glimpses of movies until “Nacho Libre” with Jack Black. The food on the flight was actually not too bad but I couldn’t convince myself to try the congee (porridge) for breakfast but omelets on an overnight Pan-Asian flight is not Denny’s let me tell you.

But you can’t take the California out of the Quail…

Kirsten never ceases to surprise me. I swear she has OJ radar. So we’re walking for about an hour and we are both getting a bit hungry and she is not too keen to acclimate to South East Asian breakfast culture until we land in Thailand. Noodle Soup…6 AM…not her gig. So we trek a bit more and deep in the farthest corner like she was drawn by a higher power we find it.

The skies part… the angels sing… and Kirsten has found a Subway Sandwich shop.

I was more excited because there was a Starbucks so I grabbed my coffee, she nabbed a muffin and OJ and we resigned to be horrible American tourists one last time before we arrive at our destination… “what happens in Taipei, stays in Taipei”
