Halong Bay
Majestic and mysterious, inspiring and imperious. A Unesco World Heritage Site. That's the description from Lonely Planet and it's not exaggerated.
Agus called it stupendous. My description is as Richie would say "Marvellous". Nina thinks spectacularly beautiful and Elsie says "eh..."
For the first time we booked a tour from the hostel in Hanoi. We had two choices, a cheaper one called The Lemon Cruise which had all the options we were after or The Cristina Cruise, the expensive luxury option. But when we went to book our lemon it was unavailable, and so our luxury adventure began (sigh 😉.
Early the next morning at breakfast a guy called Aung, as in (Aung Suu Kyi) started chatting with us, liked the sound of our trip and rushed off to buy a ticket to come too. Ten minutes later we hopped on the bus together to catch an overnight boat through the bay.
The tour included meals, a cave tour, kayaking, beach swim and oyster farm (shop) tour. There were way too many tourists and boats following the same circuit in the steamy heat, but that still didn't take away from the spectacular beauty of
this bay of almost 2000 islands. Sunset and an almost full moon rising over the karst filled bay were breathtaking.
The children were fussed over and spoiled with cuddles and games from crew and fellow passengers. It was a small group and very friendly, the Vietnamese really love children.
We have returned to Hanoi again today and had dinner with Aung, he says he believes we have been friends before in a former life. We hope one day we can visit him in Myanmar in this life!
