Sunday 21 June 2015

Our second day in Munich is a Sunday and our research shows that entry to each of the big art galleries costs only 1€ on Sunday. To take advantage of this generosity we once again caught the train, noticing it was not as full as yesterday (Saturday). Maybe some people have more to do than chase down Old Masters, Impressionists etc etc. The Old Art Gallery (Alte Pinakothek) and New Art Gallery (Neue Pinakothek) are in a different part of the City to where our commuter train disgorged us, so a quick switch to the underground trains landed us reasonably close to our goal. Integrated transport systems - yes!

Into the Old Gallery we went and found an astonishing number of paintings by artists such as Rubens, Durer, Tintoretto, Giotto and so on, and so on. There was a whole room of Rubens, and another full of Durer. We can't help wondering how Munich acquired all these wonderful art works. It is a stunning collection. We explored each room, delighted with our finds. Then on to the New Gallery, where we found many works by Cezanne, Van Goph, Degas, Monet, Manet (even a Manet painting

of Monet painting on a boat! All good things must come to an end and when we began to feel the need for refreshments it was time to test ride a tram back to Marienplatz in the centre of the city. This huge square was a lively scene, with many people enjoying the weekend atmosphere, eating and drinking, listening to a quintet playing well known pieces and always taking photos. We wonder how crowded this part of Munich gets at the height of the summer tourist season, and are quite glad we won't be there at that time.

Tomorrow will be a contrast with a trip into the Bavarian mountains planned. Maybe there won't be as many people there...
