Greek Island Hopping

Starting at Rhodes and ending in Mykonos. From there we will fly to Switzerland.

PANORAMA SLIDE SHOW: 1 & 2 - Sifnos, 3 - Kastro, 4 & 5 - Chrisopigi Trail

Sifnos still retains the feeling of a small, traditional Greek Island. It is a quiet island with lots of charm. Kamares is the port town. It has a nice crescent beach with real sand. It's a great place to walk and to swim. Two hotels, The Stavros and The Kamari, are wonderful places to call home while in Sifnos. They are run by a group of great people, are conveniently located, and have wonderful views. We have been staying with them since our first visit to Sifnos in 1992. If I was going to live on a Greek Island, it would be Sifnos.

A short bus ride took us to the capital, Apollonia. From here we like to hike to the ancient capital, Kastro. It's a nice walk through the terraced countryside. There are great coastal views, old dovecotes, and numerous churches along the way. Kastro is located on a small peak and has been maintained as a traditional village. There are very few shops or restaurants. The view of the chapel below is really stunning.

A new village for us was Faros. This small fishing village had several nice beaches and a hiking trail to one of the most popular churches on the island. Chrisopigi Monastery sits on a small peninsula jutting into the Aegean. Swimming from the rocks below is a favorite activity on the island.

I read in our "Island Hopper's Guide" that while hopping through the islands, one will speak to you. This happened to me on our first visit to Sifnos. I love coming back to this sweet spot and hope to return again.

Enjoying the journey,

RPM

Here comes the ferry

In 10-15 minutes, passengers, cars, motorcycles, trucks, produce, appliances, and other goods are unloaded and loaded on to the ferriy. Basically, everything on Sifnos arrives by ferry. For those short minutes the port is a flurry of activity and then it is deserted.

Kastro was the ancient and the medieval capital of Sifnos. It is the oldest settlement on the island.

A Dovecote

Dovecotes were built as nesting boxes for doves and to provide food for their owners. They are located on many of the Greek islands.

The one on the left is made of wood and the one on the right is made of stone. Not an easy tire change! We thought they were cool.
