English version follows. Jour 1 - mercredi, le 3 juin 2015 - Québec, QC. Mes bagages sont prêts. Je pars pour le Yukon en fin de matinée. Je passerai le mois de juin chez un couple d'amis (J. et J.) qui vivent présentement à Whitehorse et qui se marient samedi. De temps à autre, j'écrirai pour parler de mes petites et grandes excursions au Yukon et en Alaska. Et je posterai, bien sûr, quelques photos !
J'arrive à Whitehorse à 21h22. Le voyage s'est très bien passé : Vols Québec - Montréal - Vancouver - Whitehorse. Il est trois heures plus tôt qu'au Québec. Fatiguée mais heureuse d'être arrivée ! Il fait encore très clair, et à minuit, lorsque je me suis couchée, il commence seulement à faire sombre. Il fait nuit pour à peu près 4 heures sur 24. Assez spécial !
Jour 2 - jeudi, le 4 juin - Whitehorse, Yukon En après-midi, nous allons chercher, à l'aéroport, les deux enfants du futur marié. L'aéroport est à quelques kilomètres à peine de Whitehorse et au retour, nous faisons un détour sur une petite route pour voir s'il y a des aigles. Et oui, nous
voyons des aiglons et des aigles plein le ciel. Pas évident de les prendre en photo mais je réussis quand même quelques photos. Je suis bien excitée !
Jour 3 - vendredi, le 5 juin - Voyage d'un jour à Skagway en Alaska Ce matin, nous partons à cinq pour un voyage d'une journée à Skagway. Quelle belle journée ! Premier arrêt, le Miles Canyon. De toute beauté ! L'eau est vert émeraude. Sur la route, sur le bord, nous avons la chance de voir un grizzly. Nous ne sommes pas très loin, dans la voiture (environ 50 pieds selon le conducteur). Je prends des photos, avec un pied à l'intérieur de l'auto, prête en entrer rapidement si l'ours décide de venir vers nous. Mais, il est calme et mange de l'herbe. Quelques minutes plus tard, un second grizzly le rejoint. Quelle chance!
Puis, on continue la route. Nous faisons plusieurs arrêts pour faire des photos, dont un arrêt près du Bove Island et à CarCross où se trouve le plus petit désert du monde, et un joli petit village qui rappelle le temps de la ruée vers l'or. Puis, c'est le lac Émeraude et on fait
aussi une petite excursion dans la Chilkoot Trail, et finalement, Skagway en Alaska. Au moins trois bateaux de croisière sont à quai. Il y a du monde en ville!

Skagway est une ville du sud-est de l'Alaska qui comptait 862 habitants en 2000. Le nom vient du mot « Skagway » qui veut dire « ville du vent » dans la langue autochtone locale. La ville constitue une étape populaire des navires de croisières passant dans la région et le tourisme représente une part importante de l'économie de la ville. Le seul accès routier se fait par la Klondike Highway qui passe par le Yukon. Cependant, le ferry de la Alaska Marine Highway relie Skagway à Prince Rupert (Colombie-Britannique), Bellingham (Washington) ainsi que d'autres endroits en Alaska comme Juneau, la capitale. ___ Nous y passons quelques heures, et allons dîner au Red Onion Saloon. Les serveuses sont habillées comme les call girls du temps de la ruée vers l'or.
Puis, c'est le retour vers Whitehorse. J'aurai la chance de retourner au moins deux fois à Skagway, avec d'autres amis qui sont ou seront en visite chez le couple d'amis avec qui je demeure.
Sur la route du retour, nous voyons un ours noir. Je réussis à faire de belles photos ! Puis, on revoit un troisième grizzly qui est vite entré dans le bois.
Jour 4 - samedi, le 6 juin - Whitehorse, Yukon Aujourd'hui est une journée bien spéciale ! La cérémonie du mariage a lieu au Lac Fish, un des endroits préférés de mes amis. Malheureusement, la température n'est pas très clémente. Il fait froid, il vente, et pleut à l'occasion. Mais, la cérémonie est tout de même très touchante. Une soixantaine de Yukonnais, pour la plupart francophones, sont présents pour cet heureux événement. Après le mariage, on se rend tous au Kwalin Dün First Nation Cultural Center pour un souper et soirée dansante. Le champagne et le vin coulent à flots et les gens ont apporté de la nourriture, selon la formule repas partage (potluck). Quelle bonne idée ! Les gens sont très sympathiques et nous passons une excellente soirée ! Vive les mariés !
Jour 5 - dimanche, le 7 juin - Whitehorse, Yukon Après une courte nuit, nous allons tous déjeuner au restaurant. Nous sommes neuf (les mariés, membres de la famille et moi)
! Déjà, un beau-frère repart cet après-midi. Nous sommes maintenant 8 (en incluant aussi le frère de la mariée et son épouse). Demain, les enfants du marié repartent pour Québec, et nous serons 6. Tout le monde, sauf moi et la soeur du mari, sont partis faire une escalade en montagne, toujours au Lac Fish. Le temps est toujours frais, et il pleut par intermittence. Je préfère restée au condo pour écrire mon blog et faire le ménage de mes photos. Demain, on part à six pour un voyage de huit jours en Alaska.
-------------------------------- Day 1 - Wednesday, June 3, 2015 - Quebec, QC Still in Quebec. My bags are ready. I'm leaving for the Yukon at the end of the morning. I am spending the month of June at a couple of friends' who are living in Whitehorse right now. They are getting married this Saturday! From time to time, I will add an entry to my blog to write about my short and longer excursions in Yukon and Alaska. And I will post pictures!
I arrive in Whitehorse at 9:22 pm. The trip went very well: Flights from Quebec - Montreal - Vancouver - Whitehorse. It's three hours earlier than in Quebec. I'm tired but happy to be here! It's still daylight outside and when I go to bed at midnight, it's only starting to get darker outside. It's only night for about 4 hours a day at this time of the year. Quite different!
Day 2 - Thursday, June 4 - Whitehorse, Yukon In the afternoon, my friends (J. and J.) and I go to the airport to greet the groom's two children. The airport is only a few kilometers from the city centre and on our way back, we make a short detour on a country road to see if there are eagles around. Yes, they are there. We see many bald eagles in the sky and some young ones. Not easy to take pictures but I do succeed in taking a few good pictures. I'm very excited! Day 3 - Friday, June 5 - Day trip to Skagway in Alaska This morning, the five of us leave for a day trip to Skagway. What a nice day! First stop, the Miles Canyon. Beautiful place! The water is emerald green. Back on the road, we get to see a grizzly bear that is eating on the side of the road. We are not far, in the car (about 50 feet according to the driver). I take pictures, with one foot inside the car in case the bear decides to come towards us. But, he is calm and eats grass. Soon, a second grizzly comes to join him. We are lucky!
Afterwards, we make a few stops to take pictures of the beautiful scenery. We stop at Bove Island and then, Carcross where there is the smallest desert of the world, and a nice little village that reminds us of the gold rush period. Then, we see Emerald Lake and we also take a short walk in the Chilkoot Trail. Finally, we arrive in Skagway in Alaska. At least three cruises ships are in the port. A lot of people in the city. According to Wikipedia: Skagway /ˈskæɡweɪ/ is a first-class borough in Alaska, on the Alaska Panhandle. As of the 2010 census, the population was 920. However, the population doubles in the summer tourist season in order to deal with more than 900,000 visitors. It was formerly a city (urban Skagway located at
59°27′30″N 135°18′50″W) first incorporated in 1900 that was re-incorporated as a borough on June 25, 2007.
The port of Skagway is a popular stop for cruise ships, and the tourist trade is a big part of the business of Skagway. The White Pass and Yukon Route narrow gauge railroad, part of the area's mining past, is now in operation purely for the tourist trade and runs throughout the summer months. Skagway is derived from shԍagéi, a Tlingit idiom which figuratively refers to rough seas in the Taiya Inlet, that are caused by strong north winds ___ We spend a few hours there and have dinner at the Red Onion Saloon. The waitresses are dressed like the call girls from the time of the gold rush. Afterwards, we return to Whitehorse. I will get the chance to go back at least twice to Skagway, with my friends and my girlfriend's brother and sister-in-law and more friends later in June.
On our way back, we see a black bear. I take a few good pictures! And we see a third grizzly bear that runs quickly in the forest. Day 4 - Saturday, June 6 - Whitehorse, Yukon Today is a special day! The wedding ceremony is by a lake, Lake Fish, one of my friends' favorite places. Unfortunately, the weather is not on our side. It's cold, windy, and it rains at time. But it is a very touching ceremony. About sixty people living in the Yukon (most of them from the French community) are present for the happy event. After the wedding, we all go to the Kwalin Dün First Nation Cultural Center for dinner and dance. Champagne and wine is flowing and people have brought lots of food, a great potluck. The people are friendly and we have a very nice evening. Hurray for the newlyweds! Day 5 - Sunday, June 7 - Whitehorse, Yukon After a short night, we all go for brunch at a restaurant. They are nine of us (family members and me)! Already, a brother-in-law is leaving this afternoon, and we are now 8. Tomorrow, the groom's children are heading back to Quebec, and there will be six of us left (including the newlyweds). Everybody, except me and the groom's sister, are gone on a hike on the mountain at Fish Lake. It's still pretty cool outside and it rains at time. I prefer staying at the condo to write my blog and work on my photos. Tomorrow, we are leaving for an eight day trip to Alaska.
