CORREGIDORA MONUMENT
designed by Carlos Noriega , was erected in the Corregidora Plaza to mark the centenary of Mexico’s Independence in 1910.

The monument honors Dona Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez
who actively participated in the Mexico’s struggle for independence. She was the wife of Corregidor (mayor) Lic. Miguel Dominguez.

Tree of Friendship
in the plaza represents a message of love and peace that queretanos wish to all visitors.

OTOMI DANCER
(el danzante conchero) This statue/fountain, located on a busy pedestrian-only street between two plazas, celebrates the strength and beauty of an Otomi native dancer.

The earliest Querétaro inhabitants were probably the Otomí, a sophisticated society that established the city of Tula in nearby Hidalgo around 900 A.D. This indigenous race had, by this time, settled through central Mexico.

CONSTITUTION PLAZA
is located between Corregidora & Juárez. The site was originally part of the San Francisco convent complex during the colonial period. It was then converted into a plaza that housed a market.

The current plaza,
which was developed in 1963, has one column for each state in the country, each one inscribed with the names of the signatories of the 1917 Constitution.

Dancing fountain
The controversial remodeling in 2000
included the contemporary Leonardo Nierman's sculpture. (Photo here: http://www.travelbymexico.com/queratr/quer7641ADF.jpg) The circular fountain was transformed into a dancing fountain in 2008.

There is an underground car park beneath the square for 300 vehicles.

FUENTE DEL MARQUES
El Fuente del Marques is located in Plaza de Armas (aka Independence Square), the city’s main square (zocalo) & the largest.

Marques de la Villa del Villar del Aguila
The monument is dedicated to city benefactor Don Juan Antonio de Urrutia y Arana, Marques de la Villa del Villar del Aguila, who financed the construction of the aqueduct, the city’s famous symbol.

"Puppies" fountain
The striking fountain, best known as the ‘puppies fountain’, was finely carved of pink cantera stone in 1843. The Marques monument was sculpted by Don Diego Almaraz.

FUENTE DEL ADADOR MARIANO MATAMOROS
This wonderful walkway fountain, sculpted by Ignacio Mariano de las Casas, is a replica of the fountain in the local 18th century Casa de los Perros.

5 DE MAYO
The next 3 fountains were found along the pedestrian-only section of 5 de Mayo. This one is referred to as the cellist fountain.

Spectacular !
What a terrific collection of fountains ... it reminds me very much of Aix-en-Provence. And you've also given a fine illustration of all the street art distributed throughout this beautiful place: how fortunate that they don't get snowed in ... people can enjoy it all year round..
