Hello all,

We made the decision last night to book a hostel for two nights in Zhongshan, with the intension of getting a bus into Macau two days in a row. We couldn't afford to stay in Macau, and Zhongshan is only about 30km away and at about a 5th of the price. However, after we had booked the hostel here we were informed that we would not be able to go to Macau for the day and then re enter mainland China (i.e. back to our hostel, where our bags are) due to immigration laws like HK. So, we have decided to hopefully go to Macau on the ferry when we are already in Hong Kong. We have come to this hostel in Zhongshan anyway because we would have lost money on the pre-booking fee.

We caught the metro from Guangzhou to the south train station (about 1hour from hostel: 77p) and then a bullet train the rest of the way (40mins: £7.70). When we arrived we took a taxi to the hostel, this was about 20 minutes, £2.50). We had the Chinese girl in the last hostel to write down the address in Chinese symbols for the taxi man. We have booked into a hotel, so our own room and shower room, which is nice but it's still a pretty filthy hotel, but its quite cheap (£9/night, each).

We went out for food, and had a little wander-there really isn't that much here. We went to a typical cheap eatery in the evening (about £1.50 each)-standard prices but unfortunately I was ill for the rest of the evening :-( So it's a good thing we have our own room for once.... or wasted depending on how you look at it :-(

We had a chilled evening watching a documentary on the Yangtze River by Simon Reeves, and then we finished watching Gone Girl. Luckily the broken laptop scare is over and its up and running 😊 😊 😊 Neil thinks it may have been the voltage at the last hostel.

Love V&N

Looking forward to your blog every day
Hi Vicky, I lived next door to you at Hardings Drive, when you were born. So obviously you will not remember me but I follow your mum and dad on facebook (and around most of their holiday venues). I used to work for your granddad at Lister Petter. A lovely man who was very kind to me. Really enjoying this blog. Pat x
