I did the Mardi Himal trek a month ago, and can recommend it. It is much quieter than the better known Annapurna Circuit and Annapurna base camp treks, and takes a mere week to do which is enough for me these days. It's uphill most of the way, and you end up confronting a great panorama of the Annapurnas and Machapuchere. The other good thing about the trek is that you can now do it using local (basic) tea houses.

The day after my return to Pokhara, it rained heavily the whole day. I learnt a day later that up near Manang 39 people had died in a snow storm. This is really sobering. My son and I have done the Annapurna Circuit. We had no idea how dangerous it could become.

After the trek I visited the schools and children my charity, Himalayan Education Lifeline Programme (HELP), supports with volunteers and money. If you are interested in helping us, please have a look at the website: www.help-education.org
