Our driver Nicholas told us that October is a good time to come to Mykonos. It is still warm, and the large crowds of summer are gone making it is easy to get reservations at the good restaurants.
We are staying at The Mykonian Ambassador Hotel. Its architecture reflects the region, a white boxy style with colorful shutters and doors. The interior is also mostly white, and provides a sort of pure, monastic feeling. The Mykonian Ambassador Hotel is also a thalassotherapy spa (sea water therapy spa).
Upon our arrival the staff greeted us warmly with drinks and showed us to our room. It was small by American standards, but cozy with a large balcony and private Jacuzzi. The views from the balcony of the Aegean are beautiful. There were palm trees near our balcony, and when the wind blew it sounded sometimes like a whisper and sometimes like running water—very soothing. The hotel itself has quite a calming effect and the gentle-faced and gentle-voiced staff makes it feel like you are entering a quiet zone. Indeed it is true, though I was awakened last night by a couple loving a bit too loudly. Perhaps it was the
whispering palms outside their door which helped to set the mood : ) Also last night, a deft cat managed to climb up to our balcony, and got to work on the crumbs left from our club sandwich. I tried to get it to come to me, but it was a bit wild. Deke was in a deep, jet-lagged sleep for which I was glad because Deke is allergic to cats. If it had wandered into our room through the open doors, Deke would not have been happy. I closed our doors most of the way to keep this from happening; however, Deke woke up during the middle of the night and wanted to know why I had closed the doors most of the way. I didn’t want to tell him until morning that it was to keep him from the cognizance of a cat so close by.
My husband, who is a very discriminating man, wanted a bigger room so he e-mailed the concierge. We heard back from her in about two minutes after he sent the e-mail, something he appreciated very much. The next morning the staff was again very helpful and got us a room that
discriminating Deke liked (an executive suite). Deke admits freely that he is being fussy, but he will figure out a way to show his appreciation.
Breakfast was wonderful and is included with your stay at the hotel. There were Greek pastries along with so many selections, it was hard to choose. Of particular interest to me were the many fruits served in heavy syrups. I had never had figs in syrup before, and I also tried bergamot; it is a Mediterranean orange fruit, which is normally very sour on its own. I liked it so well, I think I will have it every day we’re here.
Deke and I spent most of the afternoon at the pool. It was windy, but a lovely temperature. There are lounge chairs both facing the pool and the sea. Deke didn't bring a bathing suit, but was happy to come in street clothes; however, Deke was not happy when he realized that he had sat in someone else’s wet spot. For myself, I worked on this blog and wore my beloved swim skirt. Thank you to whoever invented the swim skirt. It is a boon to women over forty everywhere!
On
a more serious note, I continue to read Aristotle while I am here. It’s wonderful to know that there have been those few philosophical beings who have pondered goodness and virtue enough to write down their thoughts, or in Socrates’ case to speak the conviction of his truth even to his last martyred breath.
I am interested in what Aristotle calls the “Chief Good.” From what I have gleaned, it is universal law applicable to all human beings. I don’t believe that Aristotle saw it as simply theoretical, but applicable to both our thoughts and our deeds. Interestingly, he seems to go easy on us if we have feelings of anger, jealousy, etc. as long as our feelings don’t engender wrong actions.
It has been a fun but reflective day. I hope to have more of these in Mykonos.
Yasas,
Monique

Exquisite
Monique!! Oh my gosh that is spectacular. Seriously, just so beautiful and your words are so descriptive. I actually laughed out loud, (I LOL) but it was true. I especially loved the views of the balcony #1 and 4. Man that is gorgeous country. I loved the musings on the goodness of the swim skirt. I am right there with you on that one! You looked awesome, by the way. Love, Carolee. Or as my European friends call me, Carolina
