Spokane to Yellowstone

Day 51.....

After 7 weeks of being spoilt by spectacular scenery, it would be easy to take it for granted. However, each new place we arrive in is so unique it exceeds our expectations - and I guess the good weather has only helped!

So, on to Glacier National Park. As well as the usual short trails, We did a fantastic 10 mile hike up and across mountains to Iceberg Lake, which as the name suggests, has small icebergs floating on it's surface. We witnessed a number of brave /stupid (delete as appropriate!) souls throwing themselves into the freezing glacial water like penguins! Not ones for the cold, we were more than happy to paddle our feet to feel the effect!

Throughout our hike we met people who had seen a grizzly bear, but no matter how much we scouted, we couldn't see one. Typically, when we got back to our car we saw 3 silver tipped grizzlies plodding along the hillside!

The following day we hit the road again in the direction of Yellowstone National Park. Along the way we stopped at Freezout Lake (no icebergs on this one!) for some impromptu bird watching and bug watching. The bugs were huge and seemed to be excited about hitching a ride on our car! It was like being in a scene from A Bug's Life (Sarah you must have seen that one - right?!).

Yellowstone National Park; a peculiar geothermal playground of bubbling mud volcanoes, colourful steaming hot springs and powerful geysers. These natural wonders are fascinating to say the least and Old Faithful lived up to its name and erupted on schedule! WHen the smell of sulphur started to feel toxic, we went on a DIY wildlife safari to see bison, coyote, pronghorns and......yes.....finally......MOOSE! Admittedly, we would not have seen the moose, which presented itself as only a spec in the distance, if it hadn't been for a very sweet old man and his telescope! It was all very exciting nonetheless!

After all the excitement, we returned to our lake-front cabin, satisfied with our sighting, but stil hoping for more......
