Cambodia really challenged me. I wasn't really ready for it, especially when everything in Thailand was so well set up for backpackers. I arrived in Cambodia and immediately noticed this huge difference - the roads were crazy, there was a lot of rubbish around, and everything felt to much poorer.
It took me quite a few days to get used to it, before I started to enjoy Cambodia properly. I found Phnom Penh too much, but started to relax much more in Battambang (despite getting eaten alive by bed bugs). Then I hit Siem Reap and everything started to look rosy 😊
It did get me thinking though, about how different backpacking is from every other type of travel experience. When my mum goes on business trips, her company is part of a scheme called
Fly PPB which gives her perks, upgrades and all that. I on the other hand am looking for the cheapest flight possible (love
RTW flights for this), often with crazy 7-hour layovers in airports and all that nonsense.
It's something that I hated at first, but now I think it's just part of the experience. One day I would like to be able to fly business class and stay in really swanky hotels. But for now I'm more than happy to be riding tuk-tuks on crazy busy Cambodian roads and stay in hostels with dollar beer on tap.

Backpacking Cambodia
I love backpacking bcos of the amazing people l meet. When l stay in hotels, l rarely get to talk to other travellers. But yes of course, one day l would love to travel first class!
