Yesterday was a super mellow day yet somehow eventful all the while. I woke up late and decided to walk into town because I really wanted a gyro For lunch. On my way out the door, I reached in the fridge for my water bottle & when I didn't see it, it dawned on me that I must have left it in the freezer. When I reached into the freezer, I noticed that my metal water bottle had completely frozen and was busted open (photo attached). As if that wasn't enough, the ants were back in full force and I spent about 30 minutes hunting down all their entry points. My head itched like crazy the rest of the day.
After eating my gyro, buying a huge bottle of water and spending some time journaling in the Plaza del Triunfo, I decided to hike back up the never ending cobblestone mountain back to el Albayzin. I cannot express how much i loathe that hill although I continuously without fail feel absolutely triumphant every time I reach the top. When I walked into my apartment, I stripped down and drank the huge 1.5 liter bottle of water I had
just purchased. This is my routine. Shortly after my return, I received a message from Hatha who offered to bring over a fan. Oh happy day! It's been so hot here and a fan just upped my experience here another notch.
After I cooled down a bit, I started feeling hungry and prepared myself a delicious meal (pictures also attached). It's been too hot to cook anything so everything I ate was all ready to go. Besides, who can go wrong with chorizo, cheese, tomatoes with salt, pepper & olive oil, mandarin orange wedges, olives & some marinated bell peppers! Okay...so this is what I do. When I'm by myself I eat like I'm at a picnic. I like to make every moment interesting.
Then at half past midnight, my doorbell rang & I knew it was Pablo getting off work. He stopped by to see if I'd like to go for an ice cream. Is the sky blue? Yes! So I hopped in his little car & he took me to his favorite spot in town. I love that you can find an ice cream shop that's open at 1 am! Side note: I find that I'm constantly parched despite the amounts of gelato I consume and despite how refreshing I convince myself it will be. Of all the different flavors I've tried, Pablo was right. That place was the best and so far it's pistachio for the win.
We took our ice cream to go and ate it at el Mirador de San Miguel Alta. The same place he took me the first time we hung out. There were tons of people there chatting, drinking beers, eating ice cream. And the view was even more breathtaking at night With the Alhambra lit up. Pablo begun telling me about the history of the Alhambra, the evolution of El Albayzin over the course of his life, and this turned into a larger discussion about modernization, religion, and politics. Super interesting stuff. At about 2:30 am we decided to leave el mirador as we were both feeling pretty tired. As we walked back to the car, I so gracefully stepped in dog poop. Ugh! In my defense, it's honestly EVERYWHERE! Here's another aside: in addition to two-ply toilet paper, I'd like to add responsible dog owners to my list of things I miss about home. Anyways, I chalked it up to being part of the experience and had to wrap my shoe in a plastic bag for the ride home.
