BOATS AND WEATHER!!!

By 1600 on the 9th, Isabela had been lifted in and was on her new mooring, with canopy up and many other things back in place. A good job because it was blowing old boots – when isn’t it? – and at times pouring with rain and accompanying thunder and lightning. We were exhausted, fell into bed by 9pm UK time and slept 11 hours!

Drimmelen is enormous – about 1200 boats near the base of a cooling tower and 2 big chimneys but it really doesn’t matter and this is where it is planned Isabela will stay, not in a tent but in a proper large house, for the winter. The following day the weather continued to be terrible, there were jobs to be done and then we discovered we had a faulty gas sensor and of course it was the weekend. We go to see Mrs Snoek, wife of Mr Snoek who owns the wintering warehouses, she says – it will be expensive but not as expensive as a funeral!!!! But this is the reason why, 3 days later, we are still in Drimmelen, waiting for the spare part and turning off the gas after each meal! But we got stir crazy on the Monday after a weekend of jobs and book reading that we ventured into the wind and squalls and motored for 4 hours around the Biesbosch – a nature reserve we tried to see twice last time but were always beaten by the weather – nothing new there then!! It was good to be out on the water though and remembering how to do things. We even went through one of the relatively few locks. As I type the sun has come out and we have turned the heating off. Colin - Heather has learnt how to turn it on!!

The other highlight was meeting up with some Stevens friends for a meal on Saturday – they are now on their 5th year in Holland so were a mine of information – but we had to drive to get there! Not an impressive way to meet boating friends but effective.

If you have got to the end of this second chapter, well done. We will aim to do some but not too many blogs and hopefully keep them interesting and will add photos – Holland is an amazing place for boaters and we will try to give some flavour of that. We would like to send our love to everyone at home and feel sorry for those of you who have to work!! As some people will know this is a different web site from what we used last time - comments on content and accessibility welcome.....
