We started the day trying to find bikes. They were supposed to be on the next street but that was closed. A cab driver saw us walking around lost and we told he what we wanted. He drove us to several places before we found a place to rent them. I cost us about $2 us to rent them. Off we went to go see the Chinese Fishing nets. We get there and see the boats and the fish. One of the nets groups invited us on board and let us work the net. You pull on the ropes and the counter balance helps raise the nets. It was fun.
We continued on biking. Man am I out of shape, the bike is hard to ride and bumpy too. We go a little farther and the kids bike up beside me and tell me I have a flat. Sigh. The end of our bike excursion.
Back to the hotel for breakfast and pack. The guide meets us and takes us into town to see the Jewish area. We see the temple. Then we walk the markets. Shelly and I find an elephant make of rosewood
that we like. Next we visit the Dutch House that has the history museum, then head back to the shops. We decide to buy the elephant.
Then off for a 3 hour drive down the coast to Emerald Isle where we will stay tonight. The guide takes us on the back roads so that we can see local life. Driving is interesting. You pass whenever there is a chance, - in between cars, whatever. Lots of scooters too. You see the women riding on the back side saddle and even holding kids at times (see picture). If you pass anyone, walking driving, biking, you beep. Beep, beep, all day long.
I’m surprised at the houses. I expected shantys, but the houses are well made and colorful. Some of the houses are rather large. I think the Kerala State is just not as poor as northern India.
We make a quick stop at the beach for pictures and then continue on the road. We get to where we have to take the canoe to the Homestay and a monsoon hits. (well, really bad thunderstorm). We are under umbrellas in the canoe going
over. Our luggage comes a little later in tarps.
We meet our first Americans in India. They are from Boston. We had dinner with them, then walked on the water after the rain and took a beautiful shot around sunset.
Bed was early as we wanted to bike early the next day.

Lovely way to discover Alleppey
Thanks for sharing your wonderful experience. We did something similar during our last visit to Fort Kochi and Alleppey. Bicycles are the best way to go around as the roads are good and the attractions are nearby. We could however manage to get the cycles quite easily as the Vedanta wake up backpacking hostel we were staying at arranged the same for us for just 100 INR for full day.
