Lisbon

We have reached the mainland and spending the day in Lisbon. We entered the port by passing under a bridge similar to the Golden Gate Bridge. Lisbon is a busy port with lots of passenger ferries and cargo ships in addition to other cruise ships.

We walked through three neighborhoods on a self guided tour. The streets are narrow and windy with laundry hanging from the apartments over the shops. There is no lack of public squares and statues. We first walked to the Castle of Sao Jorge and then unknowingly, because we were lost, we walked all around the outside of the castle. We were amazed to find ourselves right back where we had started from. Like I said, the streets are very narrow and windy.

We finally found our way out of the maze and to the Cervejaric de Trinidad which is the oldest beer hall in Lisbon. This was once a dining hall for the monks and became a brewery after the monks were expelled in 1834. The tiles on the walls are circa 1860.

The last stop was at Sau Roque Cathedral. Built in the 16th century, it is one of Portugal's first Jesuit churches. The side chapels are elaborately trimmed in gold and silver leaf. There are no pictures of the cathedral as I am not sure of the proper etiquette on taking pictures in a cathedral. Maybe some of my Catholic friends can advise me. (Peggy?)

Then it was back to the ship by way of the chocolate shop to prepare for our stop tomorrow in Spain.

Wow, I love this blog and the photos. As a Catholic and of Portuguese decent, I am clueless as to whether or not you should take photos in cathedrals. I know that I too, would have reservations about whipping out the camera. I'm glad to see that becoming world travelers hasn't diminished your discriminating taste. I just knew you two could sniff out a brewery anywhere on the planet!

As a Catholic, I say take pictures in the cathedrals! When we were in Ireland, we asked my Irish cousin and she said of course!!

Photos of Cathedrals and Churches in Europe
I'm reading thru your wonderful Blog Jan & Jerry, and loving it. I started properly, at the beginning, and have just reached here. I know my help is a bit late with regard to Lisbon but, Mark and I have just had a wonderful weekend in Normandie, France and went to Bayeux and to the Cathedral there, and we took photos, as many others were doing so my guess is Europe in general are fine about pictures in Cathedrals and Churches, although I chose 'not' to use a flash as that seemed perhaps not quite the right thing to do. Hope that helps for your further adventures and picture taking! You look like you're having a ball and I'm so enjoying reading thru these pages and seeing your lovely photos.
