Day 13 - Salzburg To Vienna

It is off to Vienna today and the day dawns the worst of the lot, freezing around 7 degrees and pouring with rain, Pam wanted to see the ‘Sound of Music’ gazebo and Hellbrunn Castle, another film site but at 10e per head I flagged it and sat in the car and listened to a great Austrian radio station, playing Led Zep, Genesis etc. Pam saw what she wanted to and thoroughly wet and cold we headed off on the 300k drive to Vienna. The drive went well enough but the rain was so heavy and the spray off the cars visibility was about 100m at best so we missed most of the lovely scenery on the way. We have to drop the car off by 4.30 today and after lunch on the way we arrived in the outskirts of Vienna at about 3 to be met with very heavy traffic, so slow that we were in the same street for about 20 mins. We found a car wash place to clean the car up and that done we wanted to drop the bags off at the hotel before the car. All good however upon arrival we were informed there had been an “electrical” issue and we had to move hotels for the first night over the road. Oh well that’s life and they kindly took our bags across while we dropped the car off. No worries the Hertz agent was only a couple of miles up the road and our hotel is on the tram line. All good and we caught the tram back and went to the “new” hotel with a fold down bed. Found a great place to eat, an American bar which served the best burgers, we are a little tired of Italian and German type food. Back to the hotel only to find the bed is about the most uncomfortable be in the universe and felt like you were sleeping on the edge of a hill sloping inwards. Also I realised my cell phone was not in my pockets, bag, pack or anywhere that we could find. The last time I saw it was in the door pocket of the car so we had to hope it was still there. So after a very bad night sleep we went to breakfast in our original hotel which was brilliant.
