Our original plan today was to catch the hop on hop off bus to see the sites around Munich but the walk yesterday showed us that we can walk the whole central city area and save 50euro. We set off and first stop was breakfast as the hotel was 7.50e each for toast and jam. Feeling this was not up to par we found a great little place serving great coffee and food at around half the cost. First off we are staying next to the Sendlingtor or south tower entrance to the city and the Isator or eastern tower was the first point of call, built around 1300 and untouched since, even the allied bombs missed it in WW2. Next stop was St Peters church another fine 13th century church and again missed by the bombs then it was time to watch the town hall, where life sized dolls perform with the Glockenspiel an old Bavarian theme, where there are some German jokers dancing around in lederhosen and two knights on horses having a tournament, it was quite a spectacle and along with the hundreds of others much enjoyed. Next, off to the last standing city gate, the Karlstor and
the Halls of Justice across the Karlsplatz. Leaving there we walked to see the Munich Residenz of the ruling family of Bavaria, the Wittelsbach’s, this is an immense structure and was started in 1300 and not finished until sometime in the 1900’s. Again an obscene display of wealth, with something like 112 rooms, the largest being the antiquarian some 69m long by 35m wide, just to stick stuff in, go figure. This building is actually a collection of buildings and courtyards and covers an area similar to say 4 city blocks.
Anyway we were getting a little weary and thirsty and as the famous Hofbräuhaus was not far away we decided to head there, what is the Hofbräuhaus you ask, well it is the most well-known beer hall in all of Bavaria and maybe even the known universe. This is a massive hall filled with old wooden tables and benches where you sit down and they bring you immense mugs of beer, you dare not order a small one as they give you a real hard time. Even the wine comes in half litre handles, so with Pam sucking on a handle of red wine spritzer and
me chugging away at a litre of beer we got talking to some Aussies at the same table and to be honest it was great to talk English for awhile. Staggering away from the beer hall it was getting late and a siesta was needed so back tom the hotel for a quite snooze. Waking at around 8pm we headed off back to the beer hall as they had what looked like good food and we loved the atmosphere. A great day was had by all. The only down side to Munich is it was bloody cold and I understand now why Oktoberfest is in October, much warmer. There is a great feel and vibe to Munich and it really seems to be the café mecca with every second building a cafe, restaurant or beer garden of some type.
