Grenoble fun

Our train trip down to Grenoble was wet and cloudy, but we managed to get a couple of glimpses of the French Alps peaking through every now and then. This beautiful little town is surrounded by snowy peaks at every turn and is the perfect launch pad for wintery activities. And how fortunate that we have some great friends, Megan and Jason, living there, allowing us to crash on their living room floor for a few days!

First activity on the adventure agenda was skiing and snowboarding on the Saturday morning. Grenoble, being surrounded by three mountain ranges, offers numerous choices for skiing. From the humble small village ski slopes with their one or two button lift but cheap ski passes to the large resorts of Alpe d’Huez and Chamrousse. After analyzing all the weather forecasts and webcams we decided to head up to Chamrousse for our first taste of snowboarding this holiday. Conditions were good when we arrived with smiles and high fives at the end of each run. However, towards midday, conditions worsened to a slight blizzard causing the girls to retreat to a more sheltered lower slope while the boys had some fun in fresh powder higher up.

Only after an exhausting day of skiing could we indulge in the French winter delicacy of Raclette. Basically like all popular French dishes, it’s main ingredient is melted cheese, and this particular dish involves melting ones own cheese to pour over special boiled potatoes, various meats, and basically what ever else you want! It’s amazing after a hard day out on the slopes.

Sunday was a beautiful day and perfect for some snowshoeing. It was a slow start to the morning due to all the wine the previous evening (required to counteract the cheese!) but we eventually got going. Again after checking the weather reports and webcam and the crews enthusiasm we settled on a leisurely 3 hour snowshoe at a nearby village. Conditions were perfect with big blue skies and perfect fresh snow. We ended the walk off with some bum sliding down the last slopes. Megs and Jase had another winter traditional meal in store for us that evening, Tartiflette!! It was another great evening of chitter chatter, cheese, chitter chatter, wine, chitter chatter cheese, chitter chatter wine.

We had an amazing weekend with our good friends and after a sad goodbye we were off on our way to Chamonix for a week of snowboarding.

Who's racing car is that? Jason, I hear you can easily raise and lower the rear suspension on those. Works on a torsion bar, just pops out, put it back in a different place, BAM, lowrider. or BAM, 4x4. Your choice.
