After seven months ashore, it's time to set sail across the high seas. We enjoyed our home time and took several long car trips; one to South Dakota for a family reunion and the other across country to Florida. We managed to do quite a bit of cruising on our own boat when we were in Sausalito, mostly to San Francisco and the East Bay. We spent the months of November and December soaking up the warm Florida sun and then flew home on Christmas Eve in order to get packed for our upcoming cruise.

We drove to Los Angeles on Jan 6 and boarded the Silversea Whisper for a two month Pacific Ocean cruise hosting for Cruise Specialists. This is a big change for us as it will be the first time in 14 years that we will not be doing a world cruise and the first time in 12 years that we won’t be on a Regent ship. We feel that changes make life interesting. This cruise will take us from California to Hawaii then to several South Pacific islands and on to New Zealand. From there we will cross the Tasman Sea

to Australia, sailing up the East Coast and making several stops in New Guinea, Micronesia, the Philippines and ending in Hong Kong. We plan to rent a flat in Hong Kong for a week before flying back home. We are very much looking forward to this voyage and meeting up with lots of cruising friends and visiting some new ports and revisiting many favorite ones.

The Silver Whisper is a small ship, carrying 382 passengers when fully booked. For our first segment there are 270 cruisers aboard. Captain Corsaro said that there is more crew on board than passengers. This is quite nice for all the travelers. The ship is expected to be full from Auckland to Sydney. Although small, the Whisper has many of the amenities of larger ships but without the crowds. There are four dining venues, a well-stocked library, extensive fitness facilities, a small casino, card room, theater, gift shops and lounges. There are numerous guest speakers booked for each segment who will be lecturing on subjects ranging from Broadway musicals to Hawaiian geology, health issues and marine biology and geopolitical topics. There are port lectures detailing the ins and outs of each of our scheduled

stops. There are bridge and dancing lessons and language classes. Although there is not a tennis court on this ship there is table tennis and a jogging track and two hot tubs and a nice pool. Current movies are available all day on the interactive TV as well as many U.S. and European television stations. So there is no reason to ever be at a loss for something to do.

We dropped off our luggage at the ship terminal in San Pedro and then returned our rental car. The boarding process was the smoothest we have experienced over the years and we were checked in and checking out our stateroom within an hour of boarding. We met up with many perennial world cruisers, Suzanne, Cele, Jerry, Red, Sue, Ann etc. The biggest surprise was running into the General Manager, Norman Rafelson. We first met Norm in China when he was the manager of the Shanghai Regent Hotel back in 2006. Then by chance we were at a dinner party in Tiburon, California several years ago and who should show up but Norman. Now all these years later he is the manager of a floating hotel on this luxury, six

star ship. Nicolas is the Food and Beverage Manager. We cruised with him in 2004 on Regent when he was a bartender. So it is always fun to renew these acquaintances and share memories.

It takes five days to sail across the Pacific Ocean from the West Coast to reach the Hawaiian Islands. That is a good way to start a long cruise. There is plenty of time to unpack and get settled into the ship’s routine and to slow down after all the last minute frenzy of preparing to be away for several months. It’s time to take a deep breath of ocean air, get our sea legs and relish the fact that we are on a beautiful ship heading out for another adventure at sea.

Will miss you on regent
Just had breakfast with Allison & Joe Trum. They are boarding the Crystal Serenity in San Pedro, 20 min from our home, for a voyage to Tokyo. Your ears must have been ringing, as your names came up. Enjoy your voyage. We are headed to Fairfax next weekend. In April we will be boarding the Voyager in Dubai, heading for Rome. Marge & Dave

Hey Susan & Kevin! Sounds & looks great! Have a wonderful cruise! We came to the Destin, FL area Dec. 18 & are here until the end of March. We wonder if you had known this, if we could have seen you on your FL travels. Maybe next time! We loved our Regent cruise in Aug./Sept. 2013 from Stockholm to Barcelona. Miss you! Love, Mary Ann & Bobby

It was only yesterday.......
that we were talking about you and wondering what you were up to. We are delighted to hear you are on Silversea. We were on Silver Wind a couple of years ago from Cape Town to Barcelona. We got the same line about "more crew than passengers" -- maybe it is part of their marketing plan! We loved the ship -- in the Italian restaurant Tessa's favorite was ravioli with a walnut sauce -- Pansotti in salsa di Noci -- highly recommended! In fact, Tessa asked for the recipe and when they gave it to her it is a recipe to serve 100 people!!! Sounds like you have a great itinerary and the idea of a week in Hong Kong sounds like a great way to cap the trip. We leave a week from Monday for three weeks in India & Nepal land based (Tauck Tours) and we are looking forward to seeing Mt Everest and spotting tigers in the wild. We will miss our sea days, but I think we will survive! Our blog will be up and running too -- will send you an alert. That's about it for now. Glad to hear from you and as always we are looking forward to future reports. Smooth sailing! Henry & Tessa

WoW!
The Silversea looks great! We may just have to take the big switch ourselves...although we are booked Tokyo to Singapore on Regent in 2015.... Good to see photo of Suzanne...give her a "hi" from us. And Red and Annie? are they on the ship? Miss you all. Bonnie and David Shannon

Here you go agin! Looking forward to the blogs-they are always fun. This ship seems small, but sounds like it has all of the wanted things. Booze included?? Keep 'em coming. How's the internet-you still want USN submissions??? Aloha Dicl

You're on Silversea. Mike and Sherry just left today on Crystal. I'm playing golf in great weather in Tucson. Life is good!

After 7 months on land did you require surgery to remove your feet from the earth; or maybe those short trips on your boat helped the transition. We would like your comparison of the two lines--especially the ship you are on and the Regent's Navigator. We will be on Crystal (for the first time) on their New York to Iceland cruise on June 1. Any suggestions on your favorite things to do there? In 2005 we will be on Regent Lima to Buenos Aires; it would be nice if you are the hosts. And, of course, about the blog--we always enjoy reading it and seeing the photos.

Glad you're back to work!!
Tee hee I live vicariously through your blog and happy to have you back on board! I sure loved the five cruises I did with Regent but I have always thought that Silversea would be the next cruise line I would try. Wishing you both a fabulous cruise and I look forward to traveling with you on your blog. Much love. P

Air to Sea
Wow another Cruise . . Fantastic! How is this for High Tech. I'm writing to you on an iPad, while in flight heading back to VNY, over the middle of the Gulf of Mexico. We are on the last leg of a 3 day Fort Lauderdale trip. Getting internet finally on the plane is a big plus for us. . and it only costs $2200/month, plus $140,000 in equipment. Enjoy your cruise. See you at the 50th. Guy

Response to blog
Dear Susan and Kevin-- Always a delight to receive one of your blogs and to drool over the pictures of your latest adventure. Your new ship sounds wonderful and the itinerary pretty close to paradise. We are heading to Ft. Myers Beach on Jan. 23 for a week. We fear that it might be on the cool side because we are heading into an arctic blast this week which goes into Florida. We will still have friends, food, and beautiful views so that is not all bad. Sandy

New Ship for Us Too
Sounds like you have a lovely new way to cruise! We're also trying a new line, Azamara Quest, going to the Sea of Cortez and Copper Canyon. New is always good!

Asia/Pacific
Loved hearing where you are and what you are doing. We are on Voyager in Akaroa and heading south. Wonder if we will share any ports. Some things are the same and some things are changed on the ship. We are on until Singapore. The Ashdowns, Eddys, and Judy Weirick are, also. Fun, but we miss you on "the back porch". XO ML

Hi to Kevin and Susan
Just a quick hello to tell you what we have been doing! We took the Navigator from Miami - departing Nov 29 - on the journey down the Amazon - what a trip!!!! Entirely different than we expected. After boating on the Missouri River around Omaha, we felt like that was a "little creek"! We ended back in Miami Dec 23. I am very, very curious about Cele as mentioned above. Is this Cele Smith from AZ who recently lost her husband Stu? Hope all is well with both of you. We are currently in Scottsdale until May 1st! Have a great trip - Myrt and Chuck

What a surprise to find you on Silversea!
Hi Susan: I thought I would meet you in Rome when you were supposed to get off the Voyager. Nobody told us about the change, but then that isn't a surprise any longer. I assume you heard that Greg was let go from Cruise Specialists? Enjoy Silversea and let me know how it compares to Regent. Perhpas I will switch to them for future sailings. Enjoy your trip. Regards, Walter
