That's a rest day?

Taking it easy was the plan considering the damaged toes. Wayne suggested a quick walk to get some lunch and take photos of some of the cat statues around the city and the kids were pretty agreeable to the idea.

After a wander around we ended up down at the waterfront where Wayne's notorious bargaining skills got us a trip across the river that divides the city for MYR8 (usually 40 sens each). The revised plan was to visit Fort Margarita although we had been fairly clearly told the fort was closed for some restoration work. Not surprisingly when we reached the fort the site was closed.

Rather than returning to the jetty and heading back to the hotel to continue the promised rest day Wayne led us a 'better way'. After roaming around what appeared to be restricted government areas and dodgy back alleys we ended up on a fairly major highway with a big roundabout. As we continued to walk in the hope of encountering a taxi or bus (we were so far off the map we had) passersby laughed, clapped and called hello as they passed (probably not a lot of pedestrian traffic in this area). We eventually got to a bus stop and decided to just sit for a while hoping a bus might appear or at least we might spot a taxi. Behind the bus stop a lady looked at us questioningly from her front yard. Moments later a man came out from the same yard to ask why were waiting there for a bus and where we wanted to go as the buses had stopped running past this spot some time ago. This lovely couple invited us in to their home, served us some cool cordial, introduced us to their family and offered to drive us to wherever we need to go.

We were so grateful that Abdul Rahman Haji Hassan was going to drive us back to the city. Wayne mentioned that we had planned to go to the cat museum. Not only did he point out which direction it was in but took us there, entered with us and waited/chatted with Wayne until we were done before dropping us on our hotel doorstep.

The cat museum is really quite bizarre but free (small fee if you want to take photos) and worth a visit just for the WTF factor.

Abdul Rahman and his wife agreed to join us for dinner and we had a lovely time discussing travel (he works with Malaysia Airlines) and the new game he has invented and is in the process of launching internationally - Hitmenten.
