Munich
Marienplatz - The magnificent Rathaus A rather complicated morning to start our first day in Germany. We had to drop 2 bags at Munich airport - these held stuff that we didn't want to carry around on our bus trip - then took the rest of our luggage to tonight's accommodation before returning our car to the rental company. This involved about 2 hours of driving around and into Munich airport and environs. The weirdest bit was finding the Global Cars site where we had to drop off the car. When we picked the car up in Barcelona in August, we had trouble finding the place which was in an industrial area with no signage. This time our trusty satnav guided us to the drop-off site. We drove onto a narrow potholed road with a few old buildings at the end. Again there was no signage and it took 20 minutes & 2 phone calls to find the office housed in what looked like an old abandoned house. Despite all this, I would thoroughly recommend this company to anyone who is considering leasing a new car for a period of 2 months or more - it was very good value and very easy to organise with

Now that our nerve-racking morning was over, we took a train to Marienplatz in central Munich. We enjoyed wandering around the Viktualienmarkt and the huge and beautiful plaza with many fabulous buildings and towers. After a light lunch, we decided to walk up to the top of the tower of St Peter's Church. This involved hundreds of narrow steps negotiated with unlimited numbers of climbers. It was pretty much an uncontrolled shambles but very worthwhile once we got to the top - a clear sunny day with great views.
We went to our hotel and were briefed by our tour guide before dinner, then time to organise ourselves for the first of (we fear) many early starts!
