A chain of five missions was established along the San Antonio River in the early 1700’s and became the largest concentration of Catholic missions in North America. By mutual agreement with the San Antonio diocese, these historic missions are now partially administered by (you guessed it) the National Park Service. So, when we went to visit the San Jose Mission, we found the gates shut.

Despite being designated as a National Historic Park, four of these missions are active parishes of the Catholic Church. Thus, for a few hours this past Sunday, the gates were open and Masses were held as usual. According to local accounts, the priest presiding at the San Jose 10:30 Mass said, “Without people accusing me of politics, people who talk stupid should not be elected into office.” Parishioners applauded.

San Jose mission was quite large and beautiful to behold. It would have been a treat to walk the grounds and explore the buildings. Luckily for us tourists, the Alamo is the one mission out of the five that is independently run by the state of Texas. God bless Texas!

By the way, San Antonio is still under severe rain and flooding weather threat. We’re leaving for Cajun country tomorrow– hopefully sunny and mild.

Do Declare!!!
This is hard to take. San Jose looks like a place I could stay and visit for a long time and just so sorry you have had to miss this as well. :(( Oh well..just move on and try and not let it get to you. Cajun country will be something else from what I have heard and the people are a bit different and not trusting. Wonder what the restaurants will serve. It will be interesting for sure. Leave the alligators there and hope you will be able to see all you want to see without any barricades. We can't wait to be there with you and hear all it with pictures. Enjoy! EM & P

Ugh, tough break!
Oh boy... Sorry to hear that you ran into more fallout from the gov't shutdown. Sounds like you're still having a nice trip though. - Ken
