Drew was up and showered, I was dragging from the day before. Come on dad this is the day we're going to Gubbio.
Oh yea! We're going to Gubbio. The first thing Drew requested when we discussed this trip was he wanted to go to Gubbio. You ask where is Gubbio and why? I’m glad you asked; Gubbio is tightly tied to St Francis of Assisi. You know the guy in the cool robe with sandals holding the birds. Well the story has it their was a big bad wolf killing off the folks in Gubbio, so St Francis comes and takes a throne from his paw and everyone is happy including the wolf. Don’t believe me, you’re not the first, pull it up on the Internet.
So Drew wanted to see Gubbio, I say ok. Just like at Darden, tell the user whatever they want to hear. Over commit and under deliver, I was taught by the best.
We hurriedly ate breakfast; Drew is in the car beeping the horn let’s go. Yea, yea, yea, finally climb in and were off.
This is the over commitment part, WE GET LOST!!!!! MAJOR LOST!!!! Two hours later were
on the right road heading to Gubbio and it’s raining. Finally we get there, we park and out we go looking for the tomb of the wolf. Long story short we don’t find it. Drew says Ok, another reason to come back. Over committed, under delivered. You get it.
However, Gubbio is a beautiful village “Italy’s most Medieval village, per Rick Steves my BFF”.
We’re back in the car heading to Assisi. I’m telling Drew when the last time I was here was when Kirsten and I came. He’s thinking yea, yea, yea.
As were coming off the autostrada and I point out my left window and say there it is, Assisi. Drew leans forward and stares in amazement. Once you see Assisi you wonder why it took this long for a pope to take the name of Pope Francis. Yea.
After parking Drew and I visit the cathedral, again Drew is in total amazement. We then visit St Francis tomb and chapel. There is pilgrimage of nuns, priest and people going by St Francis tomb. Everyone is kneeling and praying. It is a very sobering moment.
I whisper to Drew we need to set
up shop and sell robes and sandals.
My son looks at me and says; “you are a CAPITISLT”.
Yea, sorry; But you have to agree they are cools robes, right?
Overall Drew loved Assisi. Over committed, Over Delivered. LOL
We drove the car home on the Autostrada like we stole it.
We decided to go to the same restaurant the night before, when we arrived they truly rolled out the red carpet for us. Our waitress was really attentive to Drew.
After dinner Drew the owner discussed art, she used to restore frescos in her early years. Drew signed their guest book and drew one of his characters.
They loved it and Drew; finally I said, “I need to go to bed folks”
Everyone said their goodbyes and hugged each other and we went back to our room.
I was asleep before I hit the pillow.
