San Juan del Sur

By shuttle, 2hours from Granada.

A short shuttle bus from Granada (1.5 hours) and we arrived in San Juan del Sur, a surfers meca on the Pacific coast of Nicaragua. The town is small, only a couple of blocks deep spread along the beach. We arrived in time for the Nicaraguan independance day which the town decided to celebrate by erecting a stage with a big screen T.V. to show the Mayweather vs Alvarez fight. An unusual choice, we were expecting some music, but as our Hostel patio was right infront of the stage we grabed a beer and watched the contest. Quite a novelty having not watched any TV for weeks.

We spent most of our days taking a pic nic and heading out to find suitable fishing grounds, it is a beautiful bay overlooked by the usual Jesus statue, neatly curved and finished at each end by green cliffs. On the days I could persuade Mark to take a break from fishing we had great fun body surfing in the waves (although I don't think anyone watching us would have described it as body surfing, more floundering!).

After

sufficient time exploring the town and beach we moved

Watching the surfers at sunset
9km north to an eco-lodge just a short walk from 3 beautiful bays. Playa Maderas which was great for watching the surfers and sunsets, but a bit scary for us to get in the water, Playa Madjugal which was the same, and Playa Marsella which was just right. Enough surf to play in without getting killed and some convenient rocks for Mark to fish from, with the added bonus that we practically had the beach to ourselves as most people come for the bigger surf. Mark had some great catches and we had a really relaxing stay, plus some great meals at the eco-lodge. A great place to finish our stay in Nicaragua.

Fish, fish everywhere !
Well am pleased to see that Mark is having continued success with the fishing - the 'tiddlers' from the early days of the trip must just be a distant memory ! I like the look of this latest area of your adventure - great to watch the surfers but now I prefer calmer waters - I no longer enjoy getting ' pounded and battered ' by the waves ! Take care, keep safe........ and keep on enjoying yourselves x
