Pelion Trip

From Volos to Chorefto, Agios Ioannis, Tsagkarada, Fakistra, PapaNero Beach, Milopotamos and Milies

August is coming to a close and with it the end of summer. To go out with a bang, my friends John, Caitlin, my boyfriend Mark and I planned a camping trip to the Greek peninsula of Pelion, stopping at many incredible beaches and beautiful towns along the way. We packed our tents, sleeping bags, lightweight and comfortable backpacksand coolers and headed for Pelion!

We began our journey in the city of Volos, where we rented a car and then stocked up on groceries for our beach vacation. We headed to the eastern side of the peninsula, our first stop being Chorefto, a long beach with turquoise water. Eager to work on our tans, we sunbathed until it got too hot, at which point we went for a swim in the ocean. The water was so calm you could swim for miles without being caught in a wave. We ate fruit and made tuna sandwiches for lunch, my favorite meal when at the beach. We hiked to a nearby cove in the afternoon, where we had the beach to ourselves. Exhausted after a long day in the sun, we pitched our tents and went to bed early, ready for our next day of vacation.

The next day we got our stuff together and hopped in the car for our next stop on the route, Agios Ioannis, said to be one of the most popular beaches in the area. It was a windy day so we took advantage of the high waves, body surfing and playing in the surf. I was worn out from swimming after awhile and +relaxed under the umbrella with my book. In late afternoon we packed up our things and headed for the town of Tsagkarada, a charming town with old stone buildings and great views. We were starving and looked for a place for dinner. Wandering about the town, we stumbled upon Kalyvi Tavern, in Taksiarches Square, with delicious traditional Greek food. I had grilled fish and a salad with olives, feta, and tomatoes. After dinner we drove to the nearby town of Papa Nero, where we pitched at tents and said goodnight to our second day in Pelion.

We spent the next morning relaxing at Papa Nero beach, which was a unique landscape with the beach surrounded by green hills. In the afternoon we drove to nearby Fakistra, where an old tower once stood and where parts of the movie Mamma Mia! were filmed. Caitlin and I read our fashion magazines on the beach while the boys swam and tossed a Frisbee around. I could read or sunbathe for hours while Mark always complains about being bored - good thing this time he had John to keep him company! On our last day we went to Milopotamos, probably one of my favorite beaches of the trip. To get to the beach we had to take a small path winding through the massive rocks surrounding the beach. It was well worth the hike, however, when we got to the beach. White sand beaches met the calm aqua sea, in contrast to the high cliffs above. The shallow waters were perfect for swimming and diving. Mark and I had brought our snorkeling gear along and later in the day spent hours admiring the colorful fish and coral. Unfortunately after Milopotamos it was time to head back to Volos, but we made one last stop for lunch in Milies, a lovely town in the center of the peninsula. We ate at Salkimi, wanted to enjoy amazing Greek food one last time before heading home.

Our trip to Pelion was fantastic, both an adventure and relaxing at the same time. Pelion is a place I canĀ“t wait to return!
