Summing it all Up

We’ve been home for almost a week and it is time for some statistics and final thoughts.

First for the stats:

We drove 6,535 miles, touching 13 states and 3 Canadian provinces (4 if you count the times we were on the Ontario side of the St. Lawrence River in the 1000 Islands area.)

We stayed in campgrounds 33 nights at an average cost of $31.88 per night. This is higher than we normally spend, but everything is more expensive in the northeast US and Canada.

We purchased 517 gallons of gas at an average price of $3.928 per gallon. The cheapest gas of the trip was $3.259/gallon in Virginia (although the price of gas here is now at 3.169.) The most expensive was in Nova Scotia at $5.317/gallon (Canadian dollars.)

I took somewhere around 1,000 pictures. Aren’t you glad I didn’t inflict all of them on you?

As I mentioned above, everything was more expensive, from camping to fuel to food, but that was not unexpected. We saw places we had never been and visited a few places we had enjoyed before.

We had a marvelous time, the scenery was beautiful, the people were friendly, and the weather was wonderful. I guess the highlights of the trip would have to be the amazing tides in the Bay of Fundy, the gorgeous sights along Cabot Trail on Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia, the fabulous drive up to the top of Mt. Washington, and our boat ride with Cindy and Alex on the St. Lawrence River. Thanks again to the Shues. We had a great time with Bob and Gena, as always.

I do have to say that the roads in Maine left a lot to be desired. Pennsylvania’s roads were rough in spots, too, and their manner of marking construction areas was stupid, to put it mildly. We found (unintentionally) adventure roads, but survived them all. We found we still hate driving in big cities and the northeast certainly has their share of uber-urban areas. New Hampshire and Vermont were as beautiful as always and West Virginia was a delight. Prince Edward Island was peaceful and charming. Nova Scotia was beautiful, as was New Brunswick. We still love Acadia NP and the Blue Ridge Parkway. But most of all, home is what we love best.



This was a trip we won’t soon forget and we’re glad you followed along with us.
