My birthday in AustraliaMy birthday in AustraliaMy birthday in Australia

I wore Vietnamese traditional dress, but it was cold (winter in Australia), so I couldn't go out with it. In the background you can see Lake Kawana in the Sunshine Coast (June 2013).
Late June & early July 2013 - I celebrated my last two birthdays in Mongolia and Phuket. This year I planned to go to Mt. Bromo in Indonesia for this special event, but ended up visiting Australia. One of the birthday presents for me was a boat cruise on Noosa river which is 50 minute drive away from the town where I stay. It cost AUD 150 to rent a small boat for an hour and it can carry 4 people. The sunset and reflection of houses on the water were so beautiful as you can see in my photos. So far, the river cruise as well as local markets and beaches have been my favorite things to do and see in the Sunshine Coast.

It has been nearly one month of my stay in Australia. Sometimes I feel homesick. I started exploring the area where I stay by bicycle and will try to get used to the traffic here. The environment is so fresh and clean. Milk, apples and grapes are so cheap here. I also love to see western children as they are so cute and beautiful. Although the Australians are very polite and friendly, I feel it’s

difficult to make friends unless I know them through someone. It’s very different with Asia where I have traveled for a long time and I could easily talk or make friends with the locals and even was invited to their home. I know this is the western culture and people care more about their privacy. I look forward to seeing some new places in Australia and enjoying the next two months here before going back to Vietnam.

Australia zoo & the Glass House Mountains

7 & 8 August 2013 – We spent a couple of days going to the two famous sites on the Sunshine Coast. There are many zoos in different cities of Australia, but the zoo on the Sunshine Coast is the largest one in the country. It was founded by Steve Irwin (1962 – 1986) who was famous as a crocodile hunter. He died at age 44 as the result of an accident with a stingray. You can see many photos of Steve’s family (wife and two children) at the zoo. All of them loved nature and wild animals and wanted to protect them. A ticket to visit the zoo costs AUD 59. It is

so large that it would take a day to see different parts and all kinds of animals. There were some animals I have seen for the first time in my life. The koala bears looked so cute when they were sleeping and holding tree branches. You can buy food for kangaroos (AUD 2 for a pack) and feed them with your hand. Some kangaroos were so cheeky and turned their faces away when I gave them food. Perhaps they had got much food from other tourists. Suddenly, all the kangaroos jumped away then they returned.

There was a bird and crocodile show at 12pm and another show at the Tiger Temple in the afternoon, but I missed the second one. The bird and crocodile show was the highlight of the zoo. We spent 6 hours at the zoo seeing various types of lizards, crocodiles, dingoes, koala bears, birds, Burmese pythons, turtles, kangaroos, camels, Asian elephants, tigers, African giraffes and rhinos, but we still missed the central area of the zoo with snakes, wombats, red kangaroos and other koala bears. It was pity that I didn’t see the red kangaroos to know how big they are. According to the information at the Roo Heaven (kangaroo area), there are two types of kangaroos (grey and red). Some red male kangaroos are very heavy (weight 90kg) and even taller than human when they stand up (head-body length 165cm, tail length 107cm). They can jump 3m high and reach speeds over 60km/hr over short bursts. However, adult females are about 50% smaller. The grey male kangaroos can grow to the size of red female kangaroos, ie about 50% smaller than red male kangaroos. I also enjoyed visiting other parts of the zoo. It was very funny that in the Wet Lands area there was a big bird chasing western girls and biting them.

Australia zoo is the biggest zoo I have ever seen. Despite living a short life Steve Irwin had done amazing works and left a great heritage. I also think that only developed and rich countries like Australia can afford to maintain such a big zoo as it requires a lot of money.

On our day trip to the Glass House Mountains I was surprised that there are not only beaches and towns on the Sunshine Coast, but it also has great mountain scenery. Tourists can reach summits of

the mountains following trekking routes. There are 12 mountains in the Glass House Mountain National Park, of which Mt Beerwah is the highest peak at 555m. From the view point I only could see 9 mountains. We also went to some hinterland towns like Maleny, Monville etc which are very interesting to visit.

My time in Australia is coming to an end soon. In 3 more weeks I will fly back to Vietnam. I’m off for another trip to Melbourne next week. I really look forward to seeing the beautiful scenery of Victoria state.
