Day 9 Middlebury, VT - Bar Harbor, ME

We left early today knowing we had a long drive in front of us. We had planned to stop at a local maple sugar farm to see how it was done and get some pure maple syrup. I found a place on the internet that looked exactly like what we were looking for. I plugged in the coordinates on the GPS and off we all went. When we arrived at Morse Maple Farm, no one else was there. We went in and watched a 15 minute video on how they get the sap that Mr Morse narrated. What a character he was! They had a sign posted saying there were “cuss” words in the video that may not be appropriate for young children..well I immediately sent mine out. Mr Morse told the story so well we just sat and laughed! We assumed it was made in the late 80’s since we found out later he had passed away in the 90’s. I ended up buying syrup and pancake mix to make breakfast at the cabin in Tennessee. The kids also got maple ice cream which they loved! We toured the maple grove and then decided it was time to head east. We had a long way to go!

We had all made a decision that we did not want to take the freeway to Bar Harbor. We wanted to drive the back roads to get a real feeling for how people live. While this makes it harder for our drivers, it really brings to life the countryside and all that goes on. We loved all the old homes and how people mow their yards and keep everything so neat. It is really beautiful. It was slow going since the speed limit was only 50mph but well worth the drive.

Once we got to Bangor, Maine, we headed south to Bar Harbor. We are staying just outside of Acadia National Park. We plan on going and seeing what this island has to offer.

Of course....we had to have LOBSTER! We ended up letting the kids swim for about an hour and then headed back to Trenton Bridge Lobster restaurant. OMG! I didn’t even know what I was doing, but I order lobster, coleslaw, corn and chowder for us. My parents ordered the same thing (except A LOT less) and we sat down to enjoy our first ever lobster feed. We were able to pick out our lobster, watch it being cooked and then tied on our bibs to chow down! It was so worth the experience ( and $$$).

Tomorrow we head for Acadia. I am sure it will be another great day!
