Another retirement tour but this time with an apprentice (my son, Neal)!

Plans

Neal recently purchased a Porsche 911 and wanted to take it for a good trip as up to now he has only really used it for the occasional commute to work and visits to friends and family.

So the plan is to take it for a spin on a week-long tour around France.

The car is a 2001 Porsche 911 Carrera (a 3.6l, rear-wheel drive, manual 996 for those who care about these sorts of things) and is a real racer. We have had to promise not to try to see what its top speed is on this trip. It has only just left the garage where it was being repaired on Saturday but we hope this means it is in good condition now and we get us around the route.

Getting ready

As we going to spend most of the time in France we have had to take our warning triangle, yellow safety vests, spare bulbs, headlight deflectors and our own breathalyser kits. We also had to fit a GB sticker to the car registration plate. We re-used an old sticker taken off a previous car and we’ll have to hope it stays on.

Preparations

We have planned the following outline route but may deviate from it dependant on weather and driver fatigue:

We are starting from Neal’s house in Buckingham on the 19th May 2013 and driving to the Folkestone Eurotunnel terminal. We have opted for the Eurotunnel rather than a sea crossing because Neal doesn’t want to clean vomit out of his car.

From the Calais Eurotunnel terminal we are heading to Caen for an overnight stop on Sunday.

On Monday morning we are heading to St Jean Brevelay to catch up with Tim & Jan and spend the night with them.

On Tuesday we will head for Limoges and stop the night in the area.

On Wednesday morning we hope to visit the Millau Viaduct before pressing on to Clermont-Ferrand for the night.

On Thursday we will head for Troyes and stop the night there before setting out the next day to visit Tom & Marta in Brussels.

We are not sure at the moment whether we will make it to Brussels on Friday or Saturday but in effect we have a day in hand partly as a contingency but also so we can be a bit flexible.

We have booked a return trip through the Eurotunnel on Sunday 26th May. That’s all for now but we will hopefully write something each day if we can get the technology to work!

Before we could start we had to rescue Poppy the cat from her favourite tree!!!
