Dear Gracie-kins & Magster,
The overnight bus wasn't bad this time but after a little wander through the town in Airlie I did have a cheeky nap. Went out that night (as it was Saturday) and like you'll see from the photos I went out most other nights in Airlie too. It was because over the course of 3 days people I knew kept arriving ready for our Whitsundays boat trip on the Tuesday. A lot of my friends were on the same one so it was really, really good.
Anyway, I'll start from the beginning... On my second day on Sunday it was raining a lot so I used that excuse to do my washing. Also Sinead and Becks arrived that day and Marv, Julias and Joe were floating around too so we chatted and enjoyed the little reunion. I got on so well with them all, especially Becks and Sinead - such fun to be around and lovely girls. That night we went out too and managed to avoid getting soaked in the rain somehow - not sure how! Also that night I met Ami and we became close over the course of the week as she
was also on the same trip. Again, she's fun and really my kind of person. We were surprised that we didn't have any mutual friends on FB as I lived in Southampton (you know that lol) and she works/worked there. The next day was nice weather so all us girls headed to the lagoon to top up tans. Ida, Evelyn and Lina were there too - they arrived that day. Also on same boat...woo! Everyone was excited to be all together again and looking forward to the boat trip in the morning.
So Tuesday sprung around quickly which was the beginning of the trip... so it started chucking down with rain (haha) and didn't really stop for the next few days. Despite the weather though, I had a giggle and I'm sure most of the others felt the same. We had a good group so that completely made the experience. When we got on the boat we just had to very quickly accept that we were all going to stay soaked for 2 days. It was fine because we all got straight into our stinger suits and laid in one huge spoon across the deck of the boat. Because
the deck looked almost like a trampoline (Katelyn would have loved it) the water would splash up through the holes and get us. It felt like an actual bath and by far, it was warmer in the water than out. Snorkelling that day was quite good with lots of colourful fish and coral but due to the rain the water was a little murky. In the early evening we had a little break in the rain when we were anchored for the night. Another boat anchored close by and some of us knew the people on there so they swam over for a bit. That night we had dinner (prepared by a girl that works on the boat in the tiniest kitchen - don't know how she did it) and had drinks and had a party on the boat in our rain jackets! ha it's a new look 😊
The next morning - OMG I felt so seasick. As soon as I was awake I had to quickly put on my rain jacket and jump up on deck. The sea was choppy and when I was outside I felt fine but inside was impossible to handle. I wasn't sick
but a few people were. We went snorkelling again that day and the water again felt like a bath - so nice but still murky. We went to Whitehaven Beach which in the rain looked lovely - if it was sunny it would have been stunning and probably the best place I had ever seen. A few of us messed around on the beach, made pyramids, group photos and we saw a stingray in the shallow waters. Really cool when you see animals in the natural habitat. I was well entertained when we all returned to the boat as the guys were diving off, doing twists and tandem dives off the very top. Some looked good and quite elegant ... some not so elegant! We had a roast beef dinner that night then had drinks and all watched lots of massive fish swimming around the boat. Lots of us thought they were sharks at first but then we found out they were GT's (Giant Trevally).
The next morning we had to leave the boat. Soaking wet but all smiles we headed back to the hostel. It felt weird to be on still land - especially if you laid down
in bed you could still feel yourself 'swaying' - no Grace I wasn't actually swaying because of alcohol! hehe Couldn't wait to shower then actually be DRY! Woo! That night we all went out for the last time as a whole group. Was absolutely hilarious just getting out as it was chucking down with rain still. So after playing drinking games in the room we all shared and jumped into anything waterproof (regardless if there was someone in it already - few people shared) and we ran to the first bit of shelter. Then when everyone was sure the whole group was ready to run leg 2 of this relay to the bar we set off again. This repeated about 4/5 times before we reached the bar. Was a mission - a really funny one. I had such a great time with every one that night. A real good bunch - lucky me for finding them.
Overall, if the weather had been sunny this definitely would have been the best experience so far but because it was raining I would put it on par with Fraser Island. I had such a good time and laughed a lot but it
would have put the cherry on top if the sun had paid us a visit.
The next day I was off to Townsville to visit Magnetic Island...
Love you xx
