Adelaide is a great city and we are really enjoying our stay here, with so much to see and do. However, our first priority was to thoroughly clean the motorhome inside and out before exploring the local sights and attractions, as, as the saying goes, work before play! Next on the agenda was to fix our van door and a full vehicle service, ahead of our trip to Alice and Darwin and so with a clean bill of health given we can hopefully be confident that we have prepared ourselves for the long road ahead as much as possible.

We ventured into Adelaide, exploring Rundle Mall and all the surrounding shops before taking the tram to Glenelg beach, Adelaide’s closest beach. Glenelg has many historic buildings plus a lovely pier which we walked along as it was a beautiful day and then settled down briefly with a wine and a beer at a beachfront pub before taking the tram back again.

Or next venture out was to the Botanic gardens where we enjoyed a very informative 1&1/2 hour guided tour and being a Sunday it was nice to see the gardens full of families and a wedding, all enjoying the outdoor space everywhere. We then went to the National Wine Centre and took a self guided tour of the amazing architecturally designed building where we got to attempt to try, via computer, to make our own wine. Unfortunately we must not have read the many hints accurately enough as both our wines were found to be faulty and not worth bottling!

Today’s jaunt was to Handhorf Hill winery where we were served a glass of their 2012 Sauvignon Blanc along with chocolates to match the wine from Belgium and Madagascar and what with the amazing vineyard surroundings it really was a great way to pass the afternoon away.

Our visit to Central Market in the city was really enjoyable what with all the amazing displays of fresh meat, poultry, fish and vegetables on display and even camel and buffalo meat to purchase! The afternoon was spent, once again, sampling wines but this time on an organised tour in the Barossa Valley where we sampled many different sparkling, white and red wines, ports and even mead. Some of the buildings were amazing and of course, vineyards absolutely everywhere.

Our time in Adelaide has come to an end so quickly and we have had a wonderful time here even though we both agree that a city is not where we wish to eventually settle what with heavy traffic and traffic lights! There are so many things to do in Adelaide and we thoroughly recommend it. We did not go to see the Pandas, the only ones in a zoo in the Southern Hemisphere as we intend to see them in China when we finally get to that country!

Tomorrow we leave for the big long trip up the middle to Darwin and we are so looking forward to it.

John Walmsley
Received this from Trinity college Auckland. I was still hoping that I might find something for you. Your request got put aside because our print volume that lists all the CMS personnel was missing. We found it a week or so ago, and I was about to email you. His name is not known as a member of the Church Missionary Society, but I wanted to check. He personnel brought to NZ by the CMS are very clearly listed. I suspect that he was employed locally. If he came via Australia, it would be worth looking at any of the John Walmsley’s listed on convict lists. There is one whose 14 year term expired in 1838, for example. Also follow up on NSW and other state’s bdms, most of which have indexes on line, to see if he was born there or in transit. Looking on Ancestry, it is a common name in the Lancashire area: it may be possible to isolate one who is in the 1841 census but not in the succeeding census’s. Regards Judith Bright Librarian John Kinder Theological Library Private Bag 28907 Remuera, Auckland 1541 You just might run across some convicts over there that fit the description!!!!!!

John Walmsley family tree
Hi David Interesting reading! We will try and search some more but we still we still think that he came from Lancashire and hope to confirm this when we go over next year and I can research the records in Manchester. Glad to hear that the drought has broken in NZ and the grass is probably getting greener! Regards Suzanne and Pete
