Sea Lion Colony
Mar Del Plata, stinky!We left Colonia via ferry for Buenos Aires on 25th March (first class by mistake! dressed like typical back packers garlic cloves in pocket and everything to be greeted with champagne on the boat! shame it wasnt a longer crossing). We spent one night in BA just to organise our onward journey. We took a bus the following day to Mar Del Plata (5 1/2 hours).
What can I say about Mar Del Plata, not the nicest beach, not the nicest sea, a very modern town but some what lacking in character, but despite this it is not entirely without charm. This is essentially a surfers town and everyone here is very "hey guys, hows it going" very laid back and nothing is too much trouble. The town is spread over a vast stretch of coast line, about 25km from tip to tail, but the buses are frequent and easy to use. For us the highlight of the town was the commercial fishing harbour with its very pretty fleet of orange boats. From here they have a break water which stretches 2km out to sea, on the northern side of this there is a beach where a colony of sea
San Salvador
Overlooking the 2km breakwater, Mar Del Plata. lions live. It was lovely to see them all sunbathing and chilling out on the sand, but I will watch them on TV from now on, I really cant tell you how bad they smell! We also saw our first Magellanic Penguin on the beach here, it was on its own and I am not sure if this is little too far north for them, there is an aquarium here that has a penguin enclosure and I did wonder if maybe this was an escapee rather than a wild penguin!
From Mar del Plata we took a bus to Bahia Blanca (7 hours) on 30th March. We both had really bad colds and we didnt see very much of Bahia Blanca, just 2 nights to feel sorry for ourselves and do some laundry. We did get stuck in a supermarket whilst the most impressive thunder storm took place, no one could leave as the car park and roads turned to rivers, power lines were knocked down and hail the size of grapes fell with such force that you couldnt hear a thing in side the supermarket. The hostel was lit by candle light that night.
