Dear Grace and Mag,
Didn't really have the best start in Sydney to be honest...nothing really went wrong but I was jet lagged (took me 3 days to get over that), it was raining a lot for the first couple of days and the people in my hostel were not my cuppa tea. A lot of them were there long term and had jobs so weren't interested in involving new people that much - just interested in smoking weed!
On the 3rd day in I did meet some nice girls though which was great and I met them for dinner that night. I got asked for I.D as I went to go in this restaurant and it was a big surprise considering in Thailand you don't think about anything like that. There are lots of rules in Australia. The next day we walked down to the Sydney Harbour Bridge and walked up one of the pylons and looked out - was so nice you could see the parks and the Opera House and the town and all the nice buildings. It was raining a bit though so the view wasn't as great as it could have been but still
was fantastic. After we went back to the hostel to change and went to the Westfields Tower for drinks. It's the highest point in Sydney and if you go up there you have to spend a minimum if $20. It's really posh and I had champagne and it felt really nice. The outside bit slowly spun around so you got a view of the entire City - the toilets however were situated in the middle bit that didn't turn around so trying to find them when they kept disappearing was a bloody task and a half! Especially after a couple of drinks! That night we all went in a group to the Mardy Gras Parade which is an annual thing celebrating the gay and lesbian community. The atmosphere was electric as it went straight through the centre and the music was great. I didn't actually see any of it as there were too many people but it sounded good! 😊
I stuck with 2 girls, Gemma and Jess for a while after that. The three of us went to the Opera House and through the Botantic Parks which were beautiful and everything was looking up as it was now
sunny and hot and I was with nice people that were on my wavelength. We waited until after sunset to see how the Bridge and Opera House looked after dark. The Bridge was impressive and the Opera House was all lit up in white. We got the ferry over to Manley the next day and spent the day on the beach and had a little wander through the little town - was great and I was so happy the sun was still shining! Although the sun is so intense here so a few clouds in the sky for a little break, especially when you're on the beach is a good thing.
We left the centre of Sydney and went to another part called Bondi which is well known for it's gorgeous beaches. I can see why- it's really big and clean and white sand and blue sea. There's a lot of greenery around right next to the beach too. So if you don't like sand getting everywhere you can sunbathe on the grass and walk over the beach and swim when you get hot. Perfect! The hostel was really good and full of really friendly people having lots of
banter. Joined a couple of the guys on the beach and just chatted away. It's so good meeting new people literally everyday. Went out in Bondi one night and met someone that went to St. Anselm's 2 years above me! What the hell!!! Was weird but funny!
One the last day in Bondi I did a coastal walk a lot of people do there from Bondi Beach to Coogee Beach. It's almost as beautiful as Koh Nanguan in Thailand. The pathway goes right around the outside by the sea and there are different beaches you could stop at and swim and even swimming pools that are sea water but it's kept separate (you'll see what I mean from the photos). I saw dolphins jumping out the water - was so cool to see them in the wild! I also saw a really big cemetery right on the edge which actually looked quite amazing.
Was the perfect way to end my time in Sydney because since I got there the days kept getting better and better.
Love you x
