Sad to leave San Juan Del Sur, Nigcaragua

Our hostel in Tamarindo recomended a resort in San Juan Del Sur which had recently turned into a backpackers. It was run by an older couple Carla and Fred from Australia whose son had brought the land and was planning on building a hostel yet fell in love, got married and moved to New York to have a baby so his parents Carla and Fred took on this adventure them selves as they just planned to retire.

We caught a bus to the boarder checked out of Costa Rica and walked over to find a taxi to drive us to Casa Del Sol located on a hill overlooking the town and bay of San Juan Del Sur. Taxi cost 25 USD together and you should not pay more than this as drivers do try to rip you off. Luckly we were told by the hostel dont pay more!

Planning on staying 3 nights we loved the hostel and the people so much we stayed for another 3 total of 6 nights. The hostel had a pool which was heaven and a lovely bar and staff were extremly friendly. Dinner each night was cooked at the hostel and had in a family style sit down meal. Food was great consisted of tacos, chicken curries, freds famous fish and chips, lasagna, burgers and accompanied by the much needed salad and fruits. Breakfast was free either banana pancakes or eggs and toast and fruit....

We met many candians, americans, australians and luckily a newzealand couple who went to school with my sister and mark.....small world. They are the only other people we have met this entire trip that are heading UP Central Amercia as oppose to down and coincidentally are flying out of mexico the same day as us!

Most nights we had a few drinks by the pool during the sunset whilst it was happy hour. This consisted of 50 cent local Tona beers! We went to town one night with a few others from the hostal and the bars were packed with both locals and tourists but was definately an interesting expereince. There are no police in San Juan del Sur, well they arent paid so they operate on bribes.....so crime can be quite bad and walking alone at night is not advisable.

We went to a beach nearby called Maderas for the day. This beach was known for its right hand breaks and its Stingrays! Scott hired a bodyboard and went out for the day and swore he stood on a slippery stingray.. when we got back the hostal owners had told us of a girl who got a stingrays barb through her leg last week at the same beach and had to go home.

It was good to finally relax after being on the road for three weeks but short lived and are now back on the road heading north!
