Petermann Island --- January 25, 2013

This trip’s designation was the Weddell Sea, but since we were unable to proceed to it, the ship turned around and we retracted some of our past voyage and are now proceeding down the other side of the peninsula further south than we otherwise would have traveled. Last evening the seas were a bit rocky with strong winds and snow but this morning as we entered the Lemaire Channel the seas were calm and the sun shone. We made two stops at Petermannn Island, the first where an early explorer wintered and named the cove where he anchored as Port Circumcision (sounds like he didn’t enjoy being stuck here). ?The second stop was at a former British base Faraday, that was turned over to the Ukraine, and is now called Vernadsky. The channel is fairly narrow with steep cliffs and glaciers on both sides making it a photographers dream. I will let the pictures tell the story.

Hi Bob, a little tardy in replying. I didn't have a beer there but made up for it when I returned to the ship.

Morgan your pictures are phenomenal. I must find out what line you travelled on. I imagine it was one of the Discovery ships. I was in Antartica in 2003 but was unable to land so still have it on my bucket list. What a fabulous trip you and Mare are having. Thanks for sharing it. Regards,Carroll
