Trip Map

On the flight into Dubai I was met with a marvellous sight, the cityscape with its skyscrapers was facing me and as it was sunrise they all were covered in a golden glow. Towering above all of them was the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world.I’m not a big fan of Dubai but that sight was enough to change my mind (for a minute at least).

I caught around an hours kip on the flight which meant that I’d lost virtually a whole nights sleep, that combined with the time difference meant that I arrived at the Hostel at 23:30 in a very tired state but wasn’t ready to bed so I headed off to the off-license for a few beers to help me sleep. Malaysia is very cheap for backpackers but the one thing that isn’t is booze. The tax is incredible high and this means that it will cost you a fortune to go out drinking:-(

The next day I clawed back some of my lost sleep by waking up at 13:00 so that was a full 13 hours in bed. Kuala Lumpur like much of Malaysia is hot and humid and whilst I was there experienced regular thunderstorms with huge downpours that cleared up within half an hour. It put you in a difficult position though if you forgot to take your brolly out.

One of the main highlights for KL is the Petronas Twin Towers and the skybridge that spans them. Unless you queue early its impossible to get tickets for that day so my tip would be to get them at least a day in advance. I booked mine for my return trip to KL after Taman Negara.

KL has a china town and a little India and I had a stroll round the former on my first day and tackled Little India the next. Chinatown was manic with shopholders putting up their wares or taking them down again and hassling any tourist that dared to look at their products, most of which seemed to be clothes (all original of course) or leatherware.

I found a new chum in KL, who was working at the hostel and we got chatting and he said he’d been round half the world and the natural wonder that he couldn’t recommend enough was the Trenta mountains in Slovenia, including whitewater rafting on the Soca river. He was from Slovenia, but allowing for the bias he still sold it for me and so it has been added to my list.

After I left KL I realised that I had forgotten to visit Batu caves, which is a Buddhist template and one of the highlights of any visit to KL, I blame it on the jetlag.
