Big Day. Woke early - lovely breakfast again. Rebecca greets us each morning with her mild manners and her knowing smile. Edina and Andrew tease each other mercilessly and are very funny. We had our usual delicious Tonica Coffee, egg and toast. The papaya and passion juices are fabulous and fresh. We were warned to not eat fruits unless they have a rind and not eat raw veg. I haven't felt even remotely sick and don't want to, so keep to that general rule. Edina is super careful with all of us who don't have the local gut flora.
Went to KARASECO - Karagwe Secondary School - the second site for a pasteurizer. It seems to be an established place. Buildings (12 or so) look sturdy and classy. Landscaping looks attractive and planned. Met Headmaster Mr. Joseph Kabalimu and Assistant Head, Mr. Bugota. We did the formal signing of the guest book and then listened as he told us about the school. He shared with us the numbers - 600 students ranked in the top schools in Tanzania. We toured the grounds, saw classrooms, the water collection tanks, where they boil the water, the cafeteria, dorms, etc. we were told
that because the school went co-ed recently, the dorms had been converted to hold 60 girls in one room. Over the top for my taste in community living. Woo! See Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania Karagwe Dioecese to learn more about KARASECO. The engineers scouted out the site where the pasteurizer would be built. I can only describe this area as grassy, humid and buggy. The climate was not nearly as pleasant as that at Bweranyange which had a constant breeze and lower temps and almost no bugs.
http://www.karagwe-diocese.org/EN/institutions/karagwe-secondary-school.html We had tea, met 2 of George's children who were excrutiatingly polite, smart and good. Jason felt sick so waited in the truck for the others then rode to buy sand, gravel and rock. Jason, Andre and I stayed back at the hotel.
A CLERK WANTS TO MARRY ANDRE Andre and I shopped for 25 notebooks for Bweranyange at 1,200 Tsh each. Sabila, the clerk, thought Andre was "beautiful", told me to "go away" and then hopped over the counter to tell Andre she could come with him to the U.S. I got a slight kick out of it - Andre was not amused. We also bought
Edina
Manager of Kayanga Hotel Tonica coffee and Andre bought machettes. This purchase was not related to the clerk event. Exchange 1,200 Tsh = $1.00.
Edina and the Wedding Mama invited me to the 'send off' for the bride. Kitchen party It was called - maybe... I went to the large conference room/ dining area. Women dressed to the hilt - women everywhere. Beautiful clothes. Beautiful fabrics. Beautiful hair. Beautiful posture. Beautiful smiles. Loved it. They danced and danced.
Jan Dances: A woman in a beautiful green dress grabbed me by the hand and said, 'welcome', 'welcome', 'welcome' and pulled me to dance. She held my hand through the line and we (I) danced with the bridal party. Oh my. A couple of women got pretty frothy. A lady in red grabbed my hands and danced wildly. Another in aqua danced with me and beamed. I loved the music and hoped I didn't confirm any Mzungu white rhythm stereotypes. i met the mama and greeted her. She was so happy.
During it all Edina took me shopping for fabric and a dress. Wild. She told me to come back to the party. Party boke up at 8:15 and Edina gave us dinner.
The Pack
Greetings Each Day Tomorrow breakfast would be early so George could go to his friend's funeral. Yes, of course. Our team took up a small collection and gave George money for his friend's family.
Another lovely day in Tanzania. Yep.
