Mazunte Sand
Time management Mazunte was a very relaxing place, within a couple of days I’d made a couple of local friends and met a nice Swiss girl called Andrea. She gave me good tips for San Cristobal in Chiapas state. I also found a much cheaper place to stay run by Juanita and her lovely family who seemed as fascinated with me as I was with the place. Have to say though on the first night in my cheap and cheerful room the mosquitoes feasted like it was thanks giving. Boy they got my arse, literally. Those of you who know how I feel about mosquitoes love of my blood will know I wasn’t best pleased about getting 10 bites on my bum. Yes 10 bites, I was well vexed. I mean to say, did they have to call in the whole family to take a bite? Couldn't they spread it out a bit? a couple on the leg or something, jeez! Needless to say in the morning I discovered a couple of sizeable holes in the mosquito net and requested another one. Things got better after that.
I made friends with a petite guy called Joel who baked and sold bread stuffed
with cheese and tomatoes. He was cool, an artist who lived in a wicked house that was open fronted with the back carved out of the rock face it was set in. I also made friends with Manuel and his mate Jesus. They ran a corner shop where I got my daily coconut jelly, just what I needed. They shared the fish I am holding in one picture, the shop is behind me and the guy that caught is sitting down. They roasted it and we picked away at it. It was really tasty. Holding it is the closest I’m ever going to get to fishing myself. Joel also introduced me to his friend Matti who cooked us a wicked italian pasta one night, I have since met Matti on the road, so you’ll hear more about him later. For someone so young he has traveled extensively, all paid for by his skills in leather work, which gave me much respect for him. He is lost in time and really should have been a hippy in the 70’s but he’s keeping the hippy light going.
I also got to see the most amazing sights by going to Punta Comida,
Mazunte1
view from the 1st hotel I stayed at which is a point high above the crashing waves, where you get to see right across the beach of Mazunte. To get there I had to go along a path through a small forrest of spiky bushes, fight of the massive horse flies, shit man them things are big, scary and have a sting that you cannot possibly miss (they’ve made my insect hate list) and then hike up to a cliff. Once there you can get to the natural jacuzzi, which means climbing down the rock face. I didn't’t know I had it in me, but I made it. I really wish I had brought my camera because I don’t know how to do the things I saw justice with words. The colours in the rocks were amazing, slate like slithers of colour. The rocks made a natural pool that had a little opening that the furious waves clashed through making tiny bubbles of the freshest water I ever felt in my life. I can’t describe how amazing it all was with the force of nature and the harsh beauty of the rocks with the sun beating down from the bluest sky. This is a place that would be
perfect to bring someone special, a real lovers spot.
Apart from lounging around, enjoying the nature and the locals company I also met a couple from Ladbroke Grove. A lovely lively young couple who brought the grove straight back to me with a few choice sayings. It was cool we were in a bar by the sea and went out to look at the moon and watch the waves doing their thing. The guy gave hell to four french guys at the bar, I took my leave at this point as he was being unnecessary but really funny, they were not amused.
I visited the Turtle museum and ended up getting a guided tour all to myself by a very witty tour guide called Jaime. He had lived in the U.S for years and came back to build his home and settle down. It was really nice to meet someone who’s sense of humor I could understand. His dream is to create a Butterfly centre, I hope he makes it happen.
