Patan - Rani's Vav (Step Well) and Sahastra Ling Lake

District Head Quarter Patan city is located about 125 km from Ahmedabad,25 km off Ahmedabad-Abu Road High way. You can reach Patan via Unjha or Siddhpur. We went via Mehsana - Modhera - Chanasma.

The two ancient archeological and architectural marvels are located on the other side of the city and approach road is difficult.

The Rani's Vav - the Step Well - is perhaps the best of its kind in India. Nature protected it from Muslim plunderers by burying it in the ground. It was unearthed in late 1960s.

Although supposed to be simply a source of water, the seven story step well (last three stories are not accessible - not allowed), both the walls leading down the well and the pillars have exquisite carvings. See the photos....

Few hundred meters further from the Step Well is the ruins of Sahastra Ling Lake - another effort by the rulers to provide water. Name "Sahastra Ling" was given from the 1000 small temples all along the lake. Hardly any remains can be seen today....

Patan is also famous for its hand woven Patola Sari.
