Day 5 - our first Shabbat in Australia

Today is my birthday and I can't open any cards until after Shabbat!

We went to the local shul. It was very welcoming. As it is the summer holidays here in Australia the children are mainly at camp and so the mums and dads took the opportunity to have a lie in. The community was very warm and the service was a sing song service wherever possible.

Then we were invited to a different family for lunch. We walked about 2 km to their home. There again were a gathering of young families around the table. We can't thank David and Yael enough for their hospitality.

We finally left at 4.30 pm and had to walk about 4 kms back to our hosts. We sat down and chatted with Gaby and before we knew where we were it was 8 pm and Shabbat was over.

This evening I opened my cards. Thank you everybody. They were kept from me from the party! Paul and Gaby took us to King's Park via Baskin Robbins. In the park we stopped to see the city by night and the war memorials. Each tree has a plaque dedicated to a fallen soldier from the 1st WW. There is a war memorial marked with the eternal flame and we also saw the memorial to the Jewish soldiers. Then we went to the whispering wall (which really worked). It was a lovely end to a wonderful day.

It is now 12.30 am and we are going to bed! We have an early start as we have to be at the airport to take a plane on the next stage of our adventure.
