Our first visit to the doc to get our shots
So, we are getting ready to leave! We are planning to leave Norway by the end of October/beginning of November, and will be heading towards South East Asia and Oceania, when we're going where is not decided as we will make the plans as we go! All we know for now is that our first destiantion is Hanoi, and then we will probably work our way down Vietnam and up through Cambodia and Laos and through Thailand... maybe Indonesia and Malaysia before we head over Oceania... But we are booking no flights ahead of time, just taking things as they come. After all, if we have to wait somewhere a week for the weather to shift or a cheaper flight to come along, it really isn't a problem timewise.

Besides of course packing and what gear to bring and how to end up lugging around as little as possible, one big issue to consider has been vaccines. Sadie is not generally a friend of mainstream medicine, and has always been skeptical to vaccines and their effect on the immune system... But travelling to so many different places posed many health and exposure issues, as well as our desire to get off the beaten path (and not wanting to die of say, rabies in the middle of the jungle - now THAT would be lame). Also Øyvind's diabetes was a factor (more for Sadie than for him), how would his body fight off disease? Or deal with a ton of vaccines?

But in the end we caved, and followed the path of least resistance. We will be taking Hep A and B, Japanese Encephalitis, Typhoid, Rabies, and Tetanus, in addition to taking some malaria medicine with us as well as some wide-spectrum antibiotics in case of emergency. We figured once you take one then you might as well take them all. We are waiting with Yellow Fever, as it is only required in South Africa and if and when we decide to go there we will probably be in Australia, so vaccines will be available (and Australia has a health deal with Norway, yipeee!).

Thankfully we found a good doctor with a lot of experience travelling and working in such areas, as well as enough sense to tell us to take it easy and not be too worried about illnesses and such. He is at the Oslo Medisinske Senter if someone needs a good place to go. Private clinic though, so not cheap...

But we are getting fuller and fuller of antibodies! Still looking healthy, though, don't you think?
