We've titled our blog 'Moon of Honey', as we are beginning our extended honeymoon trip. I researched the term 'honeymoon' and found it's origins to date back to the mid 1500's. Because the first month of marriage is deemed to be the sweetest, one's honeymoon is the sweet month after marriage, in which it is customary to get away. We are lucky enough to have a honey-year! I've taken the year off from teaching (though I'm currently finishing a long term sub position at Basalt Middle School), and Philip has reserved chunks of time during his slow seasons to devote to travel. We hope to be out of the country all of October and November, as well as April and May. During the cold winter months we'll be in and out of Carbondale, with ideas of Britsh Columbia, Mexico, and road trips getting us out of town.
One week from today, October 2nd, we will board planes to Bangkok. I was fortunate enough to be blessed with airline passes from a friend--which allows me to be flexible throughout the year with my flying. However, it also means I will be flying stand by from Aspen to Bangkok, which involves stand-by flights in both San Francisco and Tokyo. With any luck, I'll arrive in Bangkok in time for our flight to Burma on October 7th!
We fly into Yangon, and plan to travel to the western coast, to the Bay of Bengal. We thought we'd lounge on the beach a bit and eat some fresh seafood before heading inland to Inle Lake, Mandaly, and Bagon.
After this initial leg, our plans are wide open, with intentions of traveling to Beijiing to spend Thanksgiving with my brother and his family. In between we hope to explore Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam, with perhaps some side trips to some Malaysian/Indonesian Islands.
