Sleeping until 11 am is not normal ... unless you are in Florence Italy after a long travel day! A warm shower is exactly what I needed to shake the sleep from my eyes.

My travel buddies (Ricco & Gia) went for a morning walk as I got ready for the day. Of course, the humidity was high and my hair would not cooperate. So up in a clip it went.

Before we went exploring I needed to find a room for the rest of the week. During dinner the night before we were assured a second night at our new favorite hotel. So to the front desk I went in my best pleaing voice. Hmmm, turns out they could accomodate us through Friday. If we wanted to change rooms on Friday, we could stay through Saturday. Our other travelling buddy (to be named later) will be joining us on Friday. A quick email to her in the morning to see if we could stay longer in Rome was sent off before we went exploring.

After the best "machine" cappacino I have ever had, we ventured out to the city of Florence.

We toured the Santa Maria museum and lunched in the square by the church. One of the sidewalk cafes that had lots of customers and less noise was our choice. Our first bottle of wine on this trip was a 2 star, according to the wine critic, Ricco. But, I loved it because we were in Italy! Lunch consisted of a calzone for Gia, and Ricco and I split a pizza! Yummy is the only word that comes to mind.

Then ventured to the Duomo Firenze! Pictures to follow (I promise, cross my heart!). I wanted to show Ricco & Gia the Ponte Vecchio, but we ended up going in circles behind the Duomo. Hmmm, anyone that has traveled with me knows I don't have a good sense of direction and end up going in circles. But we seem to always find our way home ... eventually!

A few cups of gelato, Gia's first canoli, and a bottle of vino for our room, we were ready for a taxi to take us to our homestead. By the time we reached the train station (a good hook up for a taxi) we were only 10 minutes from our hotel. So we kept slogging along. Wouldn't you know, we found our way back to the hotel and it was before 10 pm.

After internet connections back home, our second bottle of wine (a 3 star rating) and some really bad Italian tv, it was time for bed. All in all it was a good first day in Florence!

Ciao!
