Bicycle Fence
This fence is location along side a newly renovated store building now converted to a residence Golden is a small town about 7 miles NBW of Mineola, Texas which is the larget town in the area.
Golden, Texas is a small town of less than 200 population located about 7 miles northwest of Mineola in Wood County. Travel north on Highway 69 about 6 miles and look for the sign to Golden which is off Hwy 69 and located at the intersection of State Farm Roads 1799 and 779. According to history the community reached it’s peak population before WW1 when there were around 300 citizens. The area supplied rail road ties for a new railroad under construction from Greenville, Texas to Mineola, Texas in the 1880s.
The main activity in town the day we were there was found at the Golden Grocery & Deli which is in the center of town. The parking lot was filled with pick up trucks. Just a cross the street from the deli was the former location of Domino Grill which is now closed and a for sale sign appears of the property. Across from that closed business is the Community Center and next door is a large open amphitheater. While there is a roof over the
Methodist Church Golden Texas
Located in downtown Golden Texas venue it is open in the front and had sliding garage doors on both the left and right sides. A very neat concept so that all gathered around can be a part of the event.
A former business appears to have been remodeled into a residence and this is located in the center of town. There are some large faded letters across the front that read “”I.N.RENEAU”. The building looks great. Along side the front and going down the side is a row of bicycles implanted into the dirt. This “bike” fence is perhaps 100 feet long and the only think close to this that I have seen is that row of Cadillac’s in a field west of Amarillo, Texas. I have no ideal what the meaning behind the bikes might be as I could not locate anyone around the premises.
Just across the road from the above location is another former business building that was undergoing renovation the day we were there. There is a sign at the top which reads “Golden Homestead”. There are some pictures on the internet as it once appeared and I have posted a new photo as
I N RENEAU
Former business now a renovated home in downtown Golden it now appears.
Across from both of these buildings is a neat little city park with a historical plate that tells about Reuben Leon & Fairess (Clark) Simmons. The park the day we was there was very well maintained.
We found three church buildings in town and I have included pictures of two of them.
Now for the really neat event. There have been sweet potato festivals at Golden for several years and at least twice pictures have appeared on the Oprah Show. The event this year is listed for the fourth Saturday in October. We are definitely going back to see what this event is all about.
