New Orleans
The derelict hotel next door 4th Sept ’12 Houston to New Orleans, Louisiana
A very long drive today! After crossing the border into Louisiana we stopped at a visitor centre for a break and were given lots of leaflets and maps by one of the really helpful lady on the desk. Then we drove through Cajun country and into Plantation country passing towns like Lafayette, Baton Rouge and Blue Bayou – it was like an episode of True Blood! Then we were driving over the swamp lands and maybe it’s because of all the recent rains due to Issac but it really stank!
Then we were back into heavy traffic and entering the New Orleans area. Sadly our motel is miles out of the city centre, on a busy main road with nothing much near it but a derelict hotel next door. Still I’m sure once we get into the city and start exploring it will be great.
We did venture out briefly to a pharmacy as Howard has one of his eye infections and despite trying to ignore it for a few days he is obviously struggling with it now. He needs to see a doctor as he can’t get antibiotic eye

Scenic view of the I 10 from the motel drops over the counter here and I think he has finally realised he will have to tomorrow. That night my back went again!
5-7th Sept ’12 New Orleans
What can I say except what a chuffing nightmare! We spent a combined total of 14 hours sat in 4 hospitals today. After being told Howard may possibly have an ulcer on his cornea and hearing all the horrific things this could lead to we were referred on to another hospital who suspected it might also be this epidemic eye infection whose name I can’t remember and they referred him onto another hospital where he saw an Ophthalmologist who performed loads of tests and said it was none of those things but was a virulent strain of conjunctivitis covering the whole eye. The upshot was he now has pills and potions, we had to wait another 2 hours to get the discharge papers and finally got back to the motel at 2.30am!
The strangest thing was none of them wanted paying up front and all said we would be sent a bill, dread to think how much it will cost but that’s what insurance is for I guess.
So the next day we did nowt, Howard couldn’t open his eye and I couldn’t move very easily. There were no shops near the motel so food was a pizza delivery which was swiftly followed by a couple of trips to the loo!
Our last full day in New Orleans and by lunch time we decided to attempt getting into the city. Howard couldn’t open his eye enough to drive so we caught the bus or rather the bus and then the trolley bus – we are a long way out! We got to the French Quarter and walked around a few of the streets. We got to the main square where there was a big church and a jazz band closely resembling the one out of that James Bond movie playing. We walked along Bourbon Street which was pretty busy with lots of the bars in full swing, saw Marie Laveau’s House of Voodoo from the outside, went to the chemist and then went back to the motel both of us feeling the worse for wear.
So that was it, our 3 full days in New Orleans and we saw virtually nothing, didn’t get to do
the ghost and voodoo walk, didn’t get to see the cemeteries, didn’t get to see Anne Rice’s house, didn’t go on a paddle boat, gutted.

Sorry to hear about your lousy time in New Orleans...
I hope the medicine works.
