Dawn was wonderful. After the last few days, the early morning light was amazing. A little mist but no more thick black cloud over the mountains.

Today was also the day on which I was moving accommodation and so it was not going to be possible to walk great distances. So, after breakfast, I packed and transferred my bags to the car and set off to the new digs. Once my chores were done, it would be 12h30 before I was able to head off into the mountains.

Parking at Newlands Hause, I decided to head up to Knott Rigg, a simple ascent of 700'. The warm sun was a delight as I climbed to the summit with its minuscule cairn made that tiny bit taller by my own addition.

Once at the summit, it made sense to wander that little bit farther to Ard Crags, a mile away and a further 200' of ascent. Wainwright suggests leaving Ard Crags to August when all and sundry have gone up Great Gable. Indeed, the lonely crags did offer a personal heaven - so much so that I tarried and read in the warm sun.

With my limited time,

I returned to the car and headed off to Stair. A walk of a little over two miles and a climb of 1200' would take me to the top of Barrow. The route up the miners' track was easy, though the short cut through the heather to Barrow Door was a little more difficult. At the summit, the views were amazing, and I was the only person in the world looking at that view.

A further 800' awaited although the walk was only just over a mile. The end was Outerside. It was a lovely walk through the heather, which was just coming into flower, little pale purple flowers peeking into the late afternoon sun. The ground though was occasionally boggy but, for the first time, other walkers were on the mountains.

Four Wainwrights in one afternoon - not a bad day's work!
