Me and Billy
the most random thing ever...running into Billy Idol in Budapest yesterday morning we got a slow start since we both had to ˝beautify˝ourselves for an afternoon at the thermal baths. breakfast was my amazing honey yogurt with bits of oat and then bread with my ham cream cheese. LOL. we also caught a glimpse of our new apartment-mates, these two girls about our age from presumably the UK.
the first thing on the day's agenda was the West End Shopping Center, eastern europe's largest shopping mall. btw this keyboard is all switched around so pardon any horrendous spelling errors. kasia needed a bathing suite and i decided that i hated mine so we both HAD to buy new ones. i ended up getting the first one i saw at quicksilver but for whatever reason if you're a girl and looking for a non-whorish bathing suite, you're s.o.l. the mall itself was too busy for my tastes, and all of the stores were rather small. then there were the store clerks who liked to breathe down your neck as you looked at stuff. good times...
we spent like an hour and a half there and then headed back to the apartment to suite up for the baths. i also had
Magyar horseman
the horseman credited with founding budapest and/or hungary i believe some chocolate i bought in prague. the baths we were going to, Széchenyi, were directly east of us in the city park, so it was just a matter of walking up andrássy boulevard, right down the street from us. it was a long tree-lined boulevard with foreign embassies and restaurants. at the end was heroes square and the millennium monument. in the center was the statue of the 7 magyar horseman, representative of the founding of the hungarian nation.
continuing onward we came across the enormous bathhouse, a yellow structure with multiple domes. walking in we were pretty much stupid and had no idea what we were doing, but we paid our 2000 forint or so, got our cards, and headed up to our changing kabin thing, this little room/cage with a mirror. we took off our stuff and left our bags and whatnot in there. a worker guy locked the thing up and gave us our metal id tag thing.
TRAVEL BLOG IS BEING A BIG ASSHOLE RIGHT NOW AND TWICE DELETED THE REST OF MY ENTRY. I AM GOING TO KILL SOMEONE.
in a nutshell...
the baths were awesome. really relaxing, despite old men
Szechenyi Baths
the outside of the thermal bath complex in speedos...
i splurged at dinner and got broiled goose liver...
the house of terror, where the commies and nazis both had their headquarters, was a really great museum with reconstructed torture cells and whatnot...
we ran into billy idol on the street after having seen posters for his concerts in eastern europe since poland...
the great synagogue was great, indeed. gorgeous interior. outside was the famous holocaust memorial tree with the names of victims engraved on the leaves.
lunch was at the market hall. we got 'heart attack bread' aka langos, this bread deep fried in lard. then some authentic goulash.
then travelblog ruined my day by being stupid
time to stuff my face with cake and coffee somewhere. i love eating my feelings.
