Cochem to Verdun

This was our first day of difficulty finding a suitable hotel. In the end it wasn't too bad only too warm for sleep.

Friday, Day 11

After breakfast we headed for Burg Eltz, the castle that R. Steves claims is his favorite in all of Europe. This castle has been in tact for 700 years. It is not on the Mosel River but in a thick forest a few miles north. In my mind it is the ultimate, and maybe the first, condomium. It seems that the three families lived together inside and had separate lives. There was a meeting room where they met to work out issues but otherwise had their own lives. There is still a countess of Eltz that owns the castle. It has been in her family for 33 generations.

After this tour, we headed out without a fixed destination. We planned to stay in Trier, Germany but when we got there, we decided it was bigger than we thought and we were looking for a smaller village with easy parking. But we did find a good laundromat and took advantage of it. We also discovered the childhood home of Karl Marx.

After this stop we drove on in to France and started looking for hotels. We stopped a couple times and Jackie vetoed right away. Finally, after passing through Luxembough, made it to Verdun and were so tired that we settled on a clean looking place with lots of free parking. What we did not check was wi-fi and air conditioning. And we paid for it.

The only saving grace for this hotel was the restaurant. It was very good but not enought to pay for the lack of AC. After Jackie complained, we got a fan for the room. It was about a six inch diameter that produced no moving air.

Tomorrow we plan to visit the World War I battlefields nearby. Should be interesting.

The laundromat was about 30 yards from this house. Rick Steves always provides directions help travelers like us. This time we got this surprise.

Here's the house of the father of communism. I thought I saw a B.O. on the guest register. Could it be our guy?

When we were in Rome with two kids in one room, I went down stairs and asked the hotel clerk for air conditioning that was listed on website. He told me, oh government no allow until late May........open your window. The fun of European travel. Cheers
